Default 19/20" Setup, Please Chime In!

Hey Fellas,

I did a search and didn't see any similar threads so I'm starting one...

I have 18"s right now on my C5Z that work great...but I'm considering buying a 2nd set of "street bling" rims to run around town on. Just want to change it up a bit (vs impulse buying a new car!)

The rims I found that I like (in the right price range and wide enough for my flared rear fenders) only come in 19/20's.

Can anyone please share their experience running 19/20's on a C5 or C5Z? I'm running LG coil-overs so I'm pretty concerned about completely ruining an already harsh ride.

Will I truly be causing a pathetically bone-jarring or unbearable ride if I go to 19/20"?

Haven't looked into the best rubber available for a 19/20 setup yet either but I'm sure there are good options out there.

Thoughts? Experiences?

Thanks all.

I have had 4 different sets of 19/20's and have had no issues. For 3 sets I had the car lowered by removing the front bolts completely and cutting 2/3's of the rear bushing.

This most recent set I have LG Coilovers and absolutely love the ride!! It rides like a Cadillac honestly. It handles great and doesn't beat you to death.

Here are the only 2 shots of the car that I have right now. I need to get newer/better ones.

I ran 19/20 on my '00 for about a year or so. Wheels were the Imola Design 22 models. The only drawback I saw was the relatively short sidewall on the rear wheels - did made the ride a bit rough but other than that, no problems.

i decided to go back to an 18/19. The streets in PA are crap and I just grew tired of the ride.

I will offer some input... the problem with large diameter wheels on a C5, is the fact that you have so use such a low aspect ratio e.g. 20 or 25... this allows for very little forgiveness when you hit a pot hole, or a road hazard. Without the forgiveness and flex of a higher sidewall, the focus aspect of a pot hole transfers all the energy to the belt construction, and the wheel.
Potential for broken tire belts, sidewall failure and bent wheels exponentially increase the energy transferred because there is no side wall flex. 20 or 25 aspect ratio looks good and works fi8ne on a track, but on a public street, in my opinion , you are just asking for trouble, and a terrible ride.

Thanks, so the difference of 1" diameter made a huge difference in ride quality?

Seems that some love their 19/20 setups...and many don't/didn't. I guess like anything, opinions vary greatly (like acceptable ride quality).

If I went with these, I'd have to go 19/20 to get the rear width I want to fill out my L5 flared fenders. They don't offer the same rear widths in 19". Otherwise I'd just go 18/19. That's the rub.

I'm sure I'd dislike any loss of ride quality in general as my C5Z is already pretty stiff/harsh. Then again, I don't drive it much and generally just cruise it. If I want to do a spirited drive (or go to the track), I'd just throw the 18's back on. Hmmm, decisions...

Anyhow, I appreciate the input from all!

The orginal wheels on a C5 as we all know are 17 ft and 18 rr, C6 went to 18 ft and 19. rr
I have 19's all the way around. My rear tires are 345/30/19. my tires and wheels are 13 inches wide.
I would never go to a 25 aspect ratio, and yes, 1 inch at this extremely short sidewall will indeed ( as I said, Exponentially ) make for a dramatic difference.
A C5 can handle an 11 inch wide tire and wheel and stay correctly tucked under the quarter panel. Add two inch flairs, and you can handle 13 inches under the flair. This is what I have. 345/30/19. ( not sure what width you are looking for, but you cant get anything bigger under a 2 inch flair than a 345/30
these are 13 inches wide.

Many people on this forum will defend a poor decision to the death... usually its those who have not done the necessary research. I research everything, I go to people more qualified than me, in areas that I am not an expert. Lots of people on this forum are willing to drag, and recommend what they have, even though its a bad choice. Some are in denial, and some just want others to have what they have and hope, they will give feedback of a good experience. Many looks for validation of their poor choice by dragging them into a bad choice... I've butted heads with many who try to send new members down a poor path.

When I look at reviews of a product, I look at all the negative comment before I look at the positives... No one takes a good product and bad mouths it, but many will give a good review of a bad product, to make themself feel as though they made a good choice.

I tip my hat to all those who have made a bad choice, and are willing to express that fact.

My 13 inch wide tire on the left, 11 inch wide tire on the right before I added my 2 inch flairs.
345/30/19

Moto, the ride quality from making a jump from 18s to 20s will definitely be noticeable. However, you have flared quarters, so you are obviously running 335mm or 345mm wide tires. Even on a 20" wheel, that sidewall will still be at least 3.5-3.7" tall depending on the tire brand/model. A sidewall that height will still give an acceptable ride quality in a Z06. These things aren't Cadillacs anyway. Guys with OEM quarters are running 19" and 20" wheels wearing tires with shorter sidewalls than that, and THOSE tire sizes ride pretty harshly (295-315mm wide). Trust me. I did it. LOL It is my personal opinion that making a 1" wheel size increase will not be very noticeable. But 2" will be. I say do the 19/20" combo. Tons of C6Z guys make that move from their 18/19" OEM combo, and the C6Z has stiffer springs and shock valving. If they can handle the ride, you can too.

Go for it!! I have 19/20 TSW Interlagos with a 265/35R19 and 295/30R20 tires. I don't have coilovers but I have QA1 adjustable shocks set on level 6. While the ride is stiff it's no worse than the ride on my 09 C6 Z06. Contrary to popular thought you can get tires in 30 or 35 series which gives you respectable sidewalls and not thin rubber bands. My car is also lowered all the way on the stock bolts.

I just ordered the FS01 in Matte Brushed Silver w/ Michelin PS2's (265/35R18 FR on 18x9.5 and 305/30R19 R on 19x11) about a week and a half ago. Will be installed on triple black vert...I am a tad nervous because the Matte Brushed Silver has not been done yet but it seems like it will be an intense color to have! So in a few weeks...should have them installed! Excited to see the look and the feel on the PS2's pulling with the setup I have...

I wish I had pics and experience to help you out with now...at least you can see what sizes they recommended for my C5 Vert, base.

Side Note: My decision to go with the taller side wall was also impacted because of the hp I have; at particular times...it will result in better traction.

I am currently on 19/19 but have on order from CCW new 20" rear so can't really give any feedback on ride quality.

I will be running 255/35/19 on front & 295/30 20 on the rear, almost identical sidewall height F & R my rims have been modified to fit the tire size I want to run 9" F & 10.5" rear.

I am also installing this winter LG Motorsports drop spindles, I have a trim height tool for setting ride height to put back to stock spec or close, not sure where I will end up exactly, this should get me back to stock spring rate, and will eventually run an adjustable shock.

I am more interested in the look, I was running a taller tire on the rear 285/35/19, but it made the rim look smaller than the front, just wasn't happy with that.

19/20 tubbed, 285/30-10.5, 345/25-13
Full Pfadt c/o's, comp bars etc.

On for over ten years, wouldn't want it any other way. No off roading.

could anybody explain, why you dont go with 20/20" ? it looks better than small front rims.
