More info on 04 before purchase
I am looking to buy a 04 Corvette with 20,000 miles on it. It is at a dealership that does not seem to know a lot about the car or is not telling. What can you tell me about the car from the vin.
VIN 1G1YY22G845103797
The carfax shows 3 owners but the dealership said they think it is a one owner. What to find out as much as possible before buying.
Is there a way to find the previous owner?

Burning Brakes
Look in the glove box for the list of all options. That will tell you what options that it was built with. As far as contacting the original owners, that will be up to the dealer if they are willing to disclose that info to you. Also pull up all the service codes on the dic if there are any. There is a video here to show you how to do this. I have had my 04' for 6 years now and it has been very dependable and fun car to own. Good luck with the purchase.

My dealer told me mine was a one owner car also..once I got the Car Fax it showed there were 2 before me...No big deal...I talked to the folks that owned the car and bought it new...they said the dealership may have not known there was a second owner...he only had it for 3 months..04 with 20k on it...has not been driver much..Sounds Nice

If you are buying from a GM dealer, they can run the repair history that occurred at GM dealerships for you. If it's not a GM dealer, then you'll probably have to pay a GM dealer to run the history, but it's worth it for peace of mind. Even though Carfax says it had three owners, you might want to check Autocheck as well. I know for my 04, it reports one less owner than Carfax because AutoCheck is better at recognizing the same owner who re-registers the car in a different state or under a different name due to marriage.
I wouldn't let the number of owners influence a purchase decision for a Corvette. These are "toys" frequently garage queens only taken out on weekends. The car you're looking at has only 20K on the clock which means it certainly spent a lot of time parked, probably in a garage, as someone's toy. The good news is, such cars are usually pampered and well cared for. Still, when I bought mine, I changed all the fluids.

Due to privacy concerns, the dealer may be unwilling to disclose the previous owner. But it can't hurt to ask. In any case, get an independent evaluation of the car from a trusted mechanic - that will tell you a lot about the mechanical and cosmetic condition. Good luck - hope it all works out for you.

Ask them to print you a copy of the service history of the car. They may give you some nonsense about privacy as it may list the previous owners info, but that is easily remedied by them with a black marker and a copier. I have done it on every car I have purchased in the last 10 years and it can tell you a lot about the car and the dealer. For example, I looked at CTS-V where the dealer tried leave out the page showing that the rear end had been replaced 3 times(common problem with those cars when beat on). They gave me page 1,2 and 4. I had to ask where page 3 went...
I learned to look for this issue, because I had purchased a Subaru WRX/STI and did not look very closely at the report. When I had a minor issue/concern and did not like the answer I got, I took the car to a competing dealer who told me about the complete engine and turbo replacement by the dealer who sold me the car...Ultimately, it was not a bad thing as their mechanics were know to be really good and I had a brand new motor and turbo, but I would have probably been a little more gentle with it if I had know the motor had 300 miles on it, not 30,000. But this and several other things that happened left me with the impression that the sales people were shady as hell.
I learned to look for this issue, because I had purchased a Subaru WRX/STI and did not look very closely at the report. When I had a minor issue/concern and did not like the answer I got, I took the car to a competing dealer who told me about the complete engine and turbo replacement by the dealer who sold me the car...Ultimately, it was not a bad thing as their mechanics were know to be really good and I had a brand new motor and turbo, but I would have probably been a little more gentle with it if I had know the motor had 300 miles on it, not 30,000. But this and several other things that happened left me with the impression that the sales people were shady as hell.

Burning Brakes
When I purchased my vehicle from a dealer they gave me all the service records that they performed when the vehicle came in on trade. One item was they claimed they rotated the tires in an X fashion front to back. 17" on Front & 18" on Rear. Their service department charged the Used Car department $230 for that one line item. We all know the rotation was never completed as the 18's are on the back and 17's in front. IMO they are fraudulent with the paperwork making it look like the vehicle cost was more to sell than reality. In turn paying less taxes on corporate earned income. I have their service paperwork in hand. This is a GM dealer.

There are lots of one owner C5's all over the country....
I'd start there before I'd ever go to a dealer for a car that old....

I agree, I normally do not go to a dealer. I have purchased one Corvette from the forums. However I have not found any C5's in the 20,000 mile range at $19,000. I will continue to look for sales on this site.
