We all use measuring tools. Some use rulers, some use feeler gages and a few use micrometers.
We often see measurements as small as 0.001" and if you do internal bearing measurements, may get the opportunity to measure in the 0.0001" range.
Check out this measuring gage!!!!
It measures the thickness of a SHARPIE MARK! HOLY CRAP!
I just thought some of you would enjoy it. I know that I did:

Back in the 70's...Johanson blocks and Starrett Lazer light indicators were used to measure the journel of Mercury and Appolo space modules motors. The tolorerance was 50/ millionths of an inch. That's 1/2 of a 0.0001 in. I was doing that
45 years ago as a young engineer.
Thanks Bill that brought back memories
For those who do not know , Jo blocks as they are refered too are so flat that their molecular bond will cause them to stick together without any magnetic polarization.

Yeah, I was surprised to see when he took his zero measurement he didn't slide the block from the edge to remove air (as I was taught). I've observed different measurements by sliding in from the edge, and placing it directly on the surface then measuring. The air trapped between the flat surfaces will change the thickness. If you slide them in place, especially those blocks together, they do stick together like a summmbitch.

This whole experience taught me the value of touch, and the value of repeatable dimensions. I can repeat, blindly, to within 0.0001 in. the same measurement , over and over, because of this training that took place , for me, 50 years ago.
It has also contributed to my OCD, when making a measurement,.
Thanks again Bill C. for taking me back ... funny how somethings can " Key In " such fond memories of how I became me...... Photographs also do that for me. That why I try to capture memories one at a time.. I have over 80,000 of those memories.
Bill aka ET

Way WAY back a few years, I was trying to help a Forum Member take some voltage measurements. He asked what meter he should get and I off hand stated a Simpson 260.
Forum member LUCKY (lucky131969) asked me if I was in the Navy?
My answer: YES!
Then I asked him if he ever used a PSM-4 Multimeter (predecessor of the SIMPSON 260) He said YES, You must be really OLD! I stated YES, In fact I have a working PSM-4
MEMORIES!
Bill... I know exactly what you mean!

Is this now the geriatric engineers forum? You guys crack me up... I barely remember how to use a ruler...
Glad there are OCD, smart guys out there that love cars, or we'd still be riding horses... which might not be so bad, I'm WAY better with horses than I am with cars...Thanks for sharing the vid Bill, and you too ET for chiming in with the trip down memory lane. Love you guys

I also have a 1960 Vacuum Tube Volt Meter that still functions excellent!
