Default Interesting video about synthetic vs conventional motor oil

Ok, since some of you didn't seem to appreciate it and wanted to turn this thread into something it wasn't intended to be,

Thank you for the video. Understood some of the points made. However, since synthetic is significantly more expensive than regular oil (and probably has a higher profit margin), I am wondering whether the conclusion is profit motivated. I drove a 92 Acura Legend for 260K and used only regular 10W30 oil changing it every 5000 miles with the filter. When I gave the car to charity, it did not burn (or lose) more than 1/2 quart between changes.

Even the old beater gets synthetic (Lucas, because I sell it), the Corvette gets Mobile 1 because it always has, and the previous owner threw in two cases with the car, and my Z/28 has run AmsOil for the last 70k.

Thanks for the vid!

Thanks for the video. All my cars use it. Think I'll start using synthetic in my golf cart at work too though.

Possibly which synthetic is better and anything else that deals with personal preferences of which oil to use. There has in the past, been a tendency for these threads to turn into a heated discussion regarding the topic of oil.

I will say the video is very informative and I did learn from it, just hope this thread doesn't turn into another Mobil 1 vs Amsoil vs whatever other brands are out there.

Not meaning to "argue" here... back in the late 80's and early 90's I had a Honda Accord that had 240,000 miles on it. It didn't burn oil, but the synthetic oil I used was expensive. I think it was something like $7.50/Qt back then. I never stopped to calculate the "savings". The manufacturer claimed that the filter should be changed every 5,000 miles and that filling the filter with new oil was enough to 'freshen' the entire batch of oil without draining until 25,000 miles.

That Honda ran like a top; it never burned nor leaked oil. I know my story will sound like an "old wive's tale", but that oil seemed to do everything the company claimed. They stopped marketing it in the USA in the mid-90's I think. I had purchased 5 gallons of it for the bulk-purchase savings, and when I finally used up that drum, I couldn't find the seller anymore. That was before the internet of course; I think the company is based in Germany and now selling under the "Liqui-Moly" brand. http://www.liqui-moly.de/liquimoly/p...oiladb=web.nsf

I did a really quick peruse of the site and found this one 5w-30 they claim would go 40,000 km between changes; intended for " year-round use in Japanese and American vehicles"--though I wonder if they intend it for 4-cylinders only. In any case, ya cain't go 40,000km in a 4cyl with a conventional oil.

There was no intention on my part to start any debate, and anyone who thinks there was is definitely mistaken. Next time I'll think twice before posting a link to something that might actually try to educate you guys.
Don't be offended over what a few of us posted as our sense of humor got the better of us.

As I said, I found the video informative. So

Oil threads =

In all seriousness though, who wouldn't use synthetic in their C5? Last time I purchased it at Walmart it was around $23 for 5 quarts. I believe Costco is currently running a six pack for $25 or so after instant rebate. I use Mobil 1 in two of my cars and Castrol in the other. With synthetic oil being so cheap, there is no reason to skimp.

Oil is cheap compared to engine replacement.
