Default 11/21/17 update

Well we put the top end back together and it still knocks!

So we pulled the oil pan and found bearing trash all in the pan.

At this point we began talking cost for new rods, crank, etc. I have my old rotating assembly from my ls6 that hydrolocked last year so the plan was to pull the motor and do a rebuild using stock parts. I decided to go ahead with that route until I started looking on craigslist and found this short block deal!

Compression Ratio: 66c 11.0
Stroke - 4.000"
Disp. @ 3095: 383
Rod Length: 6.125
Crank: 4340 4.00 Forged , 24 tooth reducter
Rods: 4340 Forged 6.125 H-Beam Rods with ARP 8740 capscrews
Pistons: Mahle Dish Forged Pistons, coated tops and skirts, 6cc relief
Rings (new): Mahle plasma moly file fit low drag rings
Bearings (new): King Performance Rod and Main, chamferred mains to match crank.

And came with ARP head stud kit

So off I went to pick it up about 2 hrs away from me.

Off to the shop to drop it off and see my car

She looks so sad and dirty! Soon though she will be back and running! Since the motor gets pulled I might as well do a clutch. So I am looking at a monster stage 2 or 3.

Good choice on the 4" stroke, but unless I read wrong. The displacement with a 3.950 bore is a 392, not 383.

I second the Monster clutch

No it’s a 383, to get the 392 you need a 4.1 0 stroke on the crank with that bore

It’s going to be interesting for sure. I don’t have ported heads or a fast intake just the stock ls6 stuff. So I will probably be down some power from what most h/c/I 383s make

No. Which is good for you, more displacement.

It’s an ls1 with a slight hone to bring it to 3.905 not 3.950. With the correct bore size it’s a 383

Ah, I did go back and look and it said 3095 and knew it couldn't be that small a bore and my head just did standard small block numbers. Rock on.

Thought about running the cheapo Dorman LS2/Fast Intake?

Not sure yet what my next steps are. I have been thinking about selling this car and jumping into a new Camaro zl1. I just don’t want to get into a car payment again. So maybe next year I’ll invest in tfs heads and a fast 102 which should push me to the high 400s low 500s

Dorman bought the molds and rights to the old Fast 90. Can be had for about $350 new, now if they'd only make one in rectangle ports too.

Another vote for the Monster clutch. I have a Level 2. It's like butter and just slightly heavier than stock.

Good luck with the build!

Thanks! I already have a stage 4 on my twin turbo z06 so I am very familiar with monster clutches and what they feel like and can do so it was a no brainer even though I was tempted by that $250 Luk gold/Ls7 clutch kit people rave about on Ls1tech

i've been reading about it on ls1tech....kind of tempted!

I was checking your engine build and if i were you id just run the ls3 intake with the rod mod

I would prefer to run a stock LS3 manifold but people think they're gold, and all parts invested to what I already have here I can go with a FAST for just a little more

Alright big update time...
So I ended up buying a 383 Shortblock from CL, with my luck so far I decided I would spend the $300 to have my machine shop tear it down and verify everything was good...So glad I did!
This is what I got back from them:

Size: 104.6 KB
lifter had turned in the bore...thats going to need a sleeve

Name: 2udS2QY.jpg
Views: 34
Size: 79.5 KB
mains weren't polished after previous owner spun his rod

Name: 7pzXXRy.jpg
Views: 33
Size: 156.3 KB
everything else looking good.

So at this point I had the machine shop correct everything, and had the shop install the new motor, along with some new goodies:
Texas Speed Longtubes
BTR Stage 2 Cam
Clutch Monster Stage 2 clutch
Tick performance master cylinder
milled 243 heads
rebuilt torque tube

Now she sounds way meaner and runs awesome. I think this car is more fun to drive around than my twin turbo z06

Here is an idle clip, so far i've got the new clutch and motor broken in, and hopefully soon I can get some dyno numbers...hoping for a nice 425 rwhp and some times at the drag strip.

For now I am done with Big mods for the car, After building two motors in two years I really need to let my bank account recover

Name: j11Bvsf.jpg
Views: 30
Size: 346.0 KB anybody want some short blocks?

Anyways here she is for now!

Size: 598.7 KB

Next round of mods/repairs will tackle my wondering suspension...so stay tuned for that!
