Default Fair price for a shop to do harmonic balancer replacement?

I came across a good local shop that does a ton of work on LS1s. They quoted me approximately $600 for labor only to install an ATI harmonic balancer. They said just order the part, bring in the car, pay $600, and ATI harmonic balancer will be installed. Is that a good/fair rate or a high rate? They said it's about 6-7 hours to install the balancer. Thoughts?

that is a good price...esp since the ati is over 400 bucks for our car's...there is a lot of work that goes into installing the crank pulley...removal of the steering rack for one...i just had the machine shop install one on my fully forged ls6 and it has a proper key for it now..as well as an ARP crank bolt..which is reusable as the stock one is TTY bolt

That is a very good price for labor to install a balancer. I have seen quotes for the replacement of a stock balancer for 850.00 to over a 1,000.00 at dealerships using stock parts.

I replaced mine with a Power Bond brand and the ARP bolt. Parts were under $150.00 and my labor.

Where are you located?

If you're in Atlanta it will cost you pizza and a 6-pack...

Also, 6 hours is retarded. $600 is robbery.

It is a 6 hour job.... depending on the shop's hourly rate. Also be sure to put in a New crank bolt and a New crank seal. deleting either of these two items will have you doing the job over.

That shop needs to close their doors. I can have the steering rack out in 1 hour and a buddy using air tools has had it out in 20 minutes.

It's all downhill from there. I'd say it's a 3 hour job on jack stands and hand tools.

And there are probably guys that could do it faster than that, but the 6 hours is the average time it takes the average tech to do the job. They work at a normal pace, not like guys doing a pit stop.

Good idea to use an ARP crank bolt.

I'm not doing a pit stop. Notice I asked for pizza and beer?
Good times.

The job takes 3 hours if they know what they're doing.

A shop can charge 6 hours, and you're welcome to pay them and think that's normal, but if it really takes them almost all day to change a balancer I wouldn't want them touching my car.

Most shops will charge 6 hrs labor for the job.

I'm like a snail in the garage and it didn't take me six hrs.

Hi. I was reading through the forum and saw this offer you extended to another member. I live in Cumming GA and would be happy to buy you pizza and beer for help with replacing the harmonic balancer in my 03 vette. I just picked it up a few weeks ago. If you have any interest let me know. Thanks for your time.

Ha, I know this thread is super old, but if the offer still stands by this summer I could go for a new balancer for piece of mind as well. Hell, if the two of us pitch in we could get a keg, although I'm not sure that would help us achieve our goals. I am out in Lawrencville, but I work overseas and only come back stateside for the summers.

My thoughts...

This was last weekend. Helped rebuild a torque tube for... a 6-pack.

Then again, I work 50 hours per week at my day job, so working for 6-pack freebies borrowing space at a shop that lets me work on my own stuff (something I try not to abuse) isn’t part of the plan.

Might help for an enthusiast. This fella just got back from military deployment last month and is getting his car back together.

Most of the c5 people these days aren’t really gearheads sadly, they’re the last owner of a used up car on its way to the junkyard. Helping morons isn’t going to happen.

If you feel your car is worth helping and you aren’t a shameless leech, feel free to send me a PM.

Hey Josh, I wasn't actually propositioning you. I was more or less excited to see someone in Atlanta that is an enthusiast that does help others out. I am scraping my pennies to get my 2003 where I want it to be, and I am just grateful that the community does support each other that way. I came from a old school Ford background (I built my 1972 Gran Torino) where the backyard mechanic support is overwhelming, so getting into the new tech where it seems like you need a shop to do most things is slightly more daunting.

WOW...you are to be commended for the offer...If you can change out a balancer it shows that you are a talented mechanic...and from reading lots of your posts, i do believe you know your stuff...

If i knew that a while back, i would have come down to you and bought you 10 pizzas and lots of brew ....including the aftermart balancer, it cost me $1200+...and since i used an aftermart part(Powerbond) there is 0 warranty involved ....hindsight is 2020...
