There is no power level for gears.....
At what power levels would you say 4:10's would be too much? I'm going to get a new clutch installed this year and sounds like gears may be a nice addition to my basically stock (for now) 03' Z.
I plan to add H/C and a blower to it down the road and I'm worried that 4:10's would be too much.
thanks for the feedback Chuck!!

and even better gains on modified cars. Gears just get you out the hole quickly and push you back in the seat (which is what everyone wants).
They are quiet, reliable, and inexpensive.
Always my first choice after a good tune.
Gears make the engines job easier to push the car.....so you get more use of the power you already have.
More EFFICENT POWER..... is simply MORE POWER.
There you go.... Gear upgrades help protect the trans and driveshaft.
lots of benefits.... but they are just PLAIN OLD FUN!
CAll any time.

This thread has me all worked up for 4.10 gears in my FRC...been wanting them for some time now, just evaluating the options out there (ECS, RKT56, CoW)...

for those contemplating it, i'd highly recommend taking a drive in one so equipped first. while chances are the car its in has been tweaked some, that doesn't mean you have to romp on it. just get a feel for how it shifts. then perhaps get on it gently, depending on who's car it is and what they'll let you do.
i did. there's no way i'd have done it without.
and....i'm very happy i did the test drive and then the mod. it's one of the lower tech mods (without ripping into the motor) that seriously ups the fun factor. i haven't the slightest idea if it's good or bad for 1/4 mile or autocross, but for my use, it's terrific.

funny you mention cam swap. that was my first request to chuck at cow. i just wanted a mild lope sound, because i just like that sound at idle/while stopped. couldn't care less about adding power. actually the request was cam, headers & poss. intake too. he talked me out of it, said do gears first and enjoy the actual driving experience. he'd also re-do the tune from several years prior to make sure everything up to snuff and jibes with the new gears.
he clearly laid out the pros & cons & the costs involved, since he knew how i used the car, that way i could make an educated decision. end result is i saved quite a lot of $ and really enjoy the heck outta the car. meaning, i enjoy driving it more. yeah i'd like to hear a mild loping cam while stopped at a light or in the garage, but.....oh well. that desire goes away the moment i step on the go pedal.
not too many mechanics i know of that would talk their customer out of doing several thousand $ of work, but that happened here.
someday i might get into the cam, etc., but that'll be awhile. for now, i already have traction issues.

What he said!! I forgot about this... if you live far away from the nearest speed shop like I do, this is a big consideration. I had all my work done at a shop ~250 miles from home. With soooo many threads posted by numerous owners about tuning headaches because of engine mods, I didn't wanna face that after an H/C/I install. There's no periodic replacement "maintenance" required on the valve springs with a gear swap either, like there would be with a cam swap.

Excellent point.
If I didn't live within a short hop via flatbed (or drive) to a top tuning shop, I'd never do any mods. Just ain't worth the headache.
Been fortunate throughout my ~16 years of Vette ownership, while living on both coasts, to be near very reputable places.
You don't want work getting done on your precious Vette by a local repair shop that last worked on a Corvette via a C3 oil change 4 months ago.

I ran an "off the shelf" setup in the BMW that was sold as a package, broke a valve spring and took out the motor after like 10,000 miles or less.
I had Mike at New Era tune the car (supposedly the best guy locally) and wasn't happy with the result.

I'm so glad you went for it.... AND YOU LIKE IT!
You can't imagine how hard it is to convince people that 4.10s REALLY ARE THE BEST FOR STICK CARS!
I would do 4.10s in ANY stick car before headers.....and day. And they cost about the same.
I would NOT put a cam in a car without headers and especially a 4.10 rear end.
The way these cars are geared, they NEED 4.10s to be fun.
I'm so glad you went for it.... AND YOU LIKE IT!
Enjoy!

Chuck, thanks as always for the sage advice. Even though it was late at night at your shop, 3k miles away, you took the time out to walk me thru a variety of items, and I appreciate it.
After going thru a laundry list of stuff with you, I made the drive home from work today, about 15 miles, and ripped thru about a quarter tank of gas. Yeah, you can figure out the mpg on that one....
Lo & behold, the stuck gas gauge feed up! Hopefully that issue resolves itself.
After pretty much a 10 year hiatus with my car, it's finally getting used again, and hot damn it's fun. Lotsa bugs to work out, many of which undoubtedly due from car getting driven so infrequently.
Advice to all Vette owners: DON'T LET IT SIT!!!! DRIVE IT!!!!!
And folks if you want a great tune and service in general , give Chuck at COW a call. He'll treat you right.

I had 4.10s in my 02Z for about 10yrs and towards the end H/C/I with nitrous the gears made the car useless until 4th gear. Even more so when I swapped the engine to a 416 LS3! If you drag race your car and intend to continue adding power above 500-600rwhp range you should not go to 4.10's. Having to shift into 5th at the end of the track sucks to combat that I had to change the valvetrain to support 7500rpm shifts as well as run 28" tires. Don't get me wrong on a stock to H/C/I Z 4.10's are insanely fun!!!!! They are definitely the best bang for the buck mod if you don't intend on going crazy with power adders!
