Default Does the ext ambient air temperature sensor affect the HVAC system inside the car?

I know that the climate control has the internal temp sensor right next to the ignition, but does the external air sensor play a role in how the HVAC operates?

Something tells me this is explained in the owners manual

It only says the ext air sensor gives you an outside reading. But does it play any kind of role in how the AC works or anything like that?

On my '00 coupe the display was out and the a/c was not functioning properly, even after replacing the leaking compressor and recharging. I repaired the display and found it to be registering 55* even though a thermometer showed 100*. I replaced the OAT sensor and when it displayed the current outside temp verified by my thermometer the a/c began to cool properly.

My display is doing this right now.
It's extremely sluggish going from 55 to 70 degrees while it's over 85 outside.
A/C is sluggish too.

New one is on the way. Should be here in time for the temp to drop again.

Well this is interesting. My AC doesn't work. I recently repaired the display on my HVAC controls, and the outside temp is locked at 69 degrees. Never would have guessed the car would disable the AC because the outside temp sensor wasn't working.

Shop manual is NOT specific about exactly how it uses the outside air temp that it is monitoring so I cannot provide more details than above.
This is correct. And to piggyback, if the sensor or wiring goes out you *should* see a DTC for it (check engine light). I just went through this on one of my other vehicles.

there is a method to relearn and reset
try this
When the Front Defrost, Rear Defog and fan up buttons are pressed simultaneously.
Updates temperature display instantly.

Figured I'd come back and update on this. Turns out the temperature sensor was unplugged. The electrical harness that goes to that area powers both the temperature sensor and the under hood light. They both share the same sort of plug, but the temp sensor is female, while the hood light is male. The last idiot that worked on on the car apparently thought it was correct to leave both the sensor and the hood light unplugged, and actually plugged the wiring harness into itself. I can only imagine what kind of electrical weirdness that was causing. Anyway, corrected that, and my temp readings seem correct.

Still not getting good AC though, I'm getting error codes for both blend doors, so I'm going to try that next.
