here is a picture of a ls1 upper oil pan with the lower pan removed.

Hope this clears up what a two piece oil pan looks like.

Since yours is an 02 it is the two piece pan like past #24. Get the correct pan gasket, brake clean and torque wrench, it is an easy fix. Let us know if you cannot find the proper torque sequence, it has been uploaded on several Forum posts through the years.

SOME IMPORTANT INFO!

MAKE SURE that you have the CORRECT torque specs for those tiny lower pan bolts!!!! They STRIP very easily!!

If you have that much oil on the bottom of the engine and bottom of the car,,, I would look at the harmonic dampener seal! I lent my son my ZO6 for the evening and the next morning I had a SIGNIFICANT OIL LEAK under the car! WTF????????

Turned out, the Harmonic damper front cover seal just failed. Nothing he did. Had to replace the seal & the damper cause the hub sealing surface was scored and grooved. The OEM GM Seal is very hard and scores the dampener sealing surface over time.

MADE a significant mess.

The upper and lower oil pan gaskets are very robust and seldom outright just FAIL. Its an aluminum O ring embossed gasket. Oil pan leaks are normally caused by loose fasteners.

Well you're saving about 1K doing it your self. That's what I paid to have a pro do it. Oh but I also got headers, high flow cats x pipe and a rear end gear swap as long as it was at the shop and other odds and ens that it paid to replace while the front cradle was down

Thanks.
There was some very minor scoring on the oil pan where the pully had shifted back when the harmonic balancer failed. The mechanic suspected that it had possibly weakened the pan gasket. I did have front main seal and timing cover gaskets replaced but you have a point. Sometimes things fail right out of the box.

Didn't you just recently have your harmonic balancer and seals replaced when you got your 4:10's? Did the leak start since this was done? If so bring it back to where the work was done.

I would rule out everything else before starting on the oil pan. Good luck, Casey.

Yes. And it's maddening that I can't enjoy all the improvements. I would take it back but the shop is a 700 mile drive from here.

Just a suggestion that may save you a lot of work. You may want to check to see if your leak is coming from your valley cover gasket. On my 06 GTO, I had an oil leak that at first seemed like it was the oil pan gasket. It turned out that it was the valley cover gasket leaking at the back of the engine down both sides of the block. I changed the valley gasket, cleaned the engine with Simple Green and a pressure washer and sure enough no more oil leak.

It is between the top of the block and the valley cover underneath the intake manifold. Much easier to get to and change out than an oil pan gasket. I would check the engine in the back near the manifold. If there is oil there then it may not be the pan.

So just had an interesting conversation.... guy who has done this several times on his C5. Said it can be done with kmember in place. Said you stick the cherry picker on. Release the motor mount bolts. Lift the engine a couple inches. Drop the oil pan bolts. Pull it down far enough to get to the tube and release the 8mm bolt holding it. Drop the pan a bit more and slide it out the back. Anyone here tried that ?

Anyone? Buller? Lol
Has anyone tried doing the oil pan gasket without dropping kmember as described one post up?
