Default Headlight motor chatters when in parked postion.

Hello, last night came home and when stopped the headlights went down properly, when both were in parked position the passenger motor chattered for about 15 seconds before stopping. They both work properly except for the chattering noise when parked. Would this be the motor gear stripped. All suggestions welcome. Greetings, Rob

That's more than likely the gear. Not hard to change, I think the worst part was getting the case separated. It's been awhile since I changed mine. There are some good detailed threads around here.

Your gear is stripped. Time to replace it.

You can buy the gear kit for 50 bucks or a complete rebuilt motor assembly for $75 at Rock Auto if you want to go that route.

It seems you probably have a broken plastic gear in the headlights.

Get a kit like this one (pay attention because there are 2 different kits: one for "97 to early 2000" and another for "late 2000 to 2004") and follow these step-by-step directions. You'll save money and they will last forever

You might need these as well (the rubber bump stops).

There is a TSB, that calls for shimming the driver's side motor. The parts needed for this are included in the above mentioned kit.

Good walk through on You tube, make sure you let the epoxy set up

Gonna take a couple hours to do it right, plus overnight to let the epoxy fully dry.

I got zipcorevettes kit - Brass gear, reinforcement t-bar, lube, spacers, epoxy (and printed instructions ).

Once you get the motor out of the car, you have to carefully break the glue bead (couple of small flat blade screwdrivers worked for me).

Once the cover is off, clean off everything, replace the gear, lube everything, mix the epoxy, glue the cover back on, and clamp it.

Wait overnight for good drying time, then reassemble everything.

Hardest part is getting the motor out. IIRC, need 8mm wrench plus a Phillips and torx screwdriver , plus a...7/16 or 10mm (I forget which) socket, I think.

One thing I remember when I replaced mine is to put painter's tape around the headlight opening to prevent scratching the paint when taking headlight out. I don't remember using epoxy though

Make sure you don't get in a hurry and let the epoxy or glue fully set up or dry!
