Default Door Locked Itself with Car Running !

I have a 2002 Coupe. I pulled into our alley to park in the garage. I got out of the car to move another car that was in the way. When I went back to get in the Vette, the doors were locked with the key in the ignition and car running... And yes, I only have one key for this car.How did this happen or what causes it ? After some minor panic for several minutes and no other options, I went and got a coat hanger. It only took about 2 minutes to snake it down between the window and rubber to hit the unlock button and open the door. No alarm went off on the car. I'm getting my extra key made ASAP. This ever happen to any of you ?

Never... But then I've never left my car running, closed the door even for a second, without an open window. '02 didn't have the passive key feature anymore did it?

Don't know about this feature on my particular car. I wish I would have known about it before tonight. Never expected it to do that but I learned my lesson.

'02s do not have the passive key feature. OP, assuming you did not inadvertently and/or unconsciously hit your lock button, sounds like you may have just encountered the odd electrical gremlin. Unfortunately, electrical issues seem to be our cars' Achilles heel.

Same here. I never fully trust computerized things so I always drop the window prior to exiting any car with it running.

Whenever I get out of the car and its running, I try to conciously use the unlock function on the door, so I am assured I can get back in.

Ignitions have many wild "what if's". The Lexus has a button vs a key.....wife left the car running during going out for dinner (over an hour). Lucky she didn't have the car stolen.

But just in case I have one of those senior moments (happening more frequently ) and forget to do, I carry a spare key in my wallet.

You didn't by chance use the door to help you get out of the car did you? Could have pressed the lock key while doing so?

The fob was hanging from the key in the ignition so I know it wasn't that. I'm pretty sure I didn't hit the door lock button on the way out but anything is possible. I'm just kinda shocked how easy it was to get back in with just a coat hanger... and the alarm didn't go off when I opened the door. I've only had this car for a little over a year and still getting to know it and all it's features (and quirks).

Same thing happened to my '02Z twice. PITA, because it was 5 years ago it first happened, and I just plain forgot. No extra key yet...

Hasn't happened to me, but I always expect it to, so I never leave the car running with the key inside unless someone else is inside too.

Only vehicle i own that I trust is the 92 toyota pickup. Manual windows and locks, and just in case you can still get an arm in the rear window to unlock it if you're 6'2 with long arms.

Also, the alarm is disabled when the car is running, so it would never go off no matter how you opened the door...

I'm in the camp of keeping windows open when i get out with it running -- unless i'm at home knowing the spare key is inside...

The car would not know you are not inside! So why would alarm go off?

Same as mentioned earlier, I always leave the window open when the motor is running and I have to step out. You could also make a duplicate key without the resistors so easier to copy. You wouldn't be able to start the car but could open the door.

I believe that most female C5's have the WPD (Wallet Proximity Detect) system which senses when a driver tries to gain entry with an empty wallet and denies access. Returning with a replenished wallet will cause doors to unlock as swing open with no further action required.

I don't know about the C5 but the C6 can be programed to lock the doors when engine starts.
also when in the mode, the car will not let you open the doors until the engine is turned off.
the odd thing is in my car if you start the car leave the fob in cup holder and get out, , then shut the door and it does not look,
does not make sense.
