It's not about pretending anything, it's about getting the most enjoyment out of a sophisticated sports car. Some don't buy a Corvette to put the gear selector in D then snuffle off to the local cars and coffee.

When doing some spirited driving y'all ain't just putting it in D and mashing the pedal right?
That's what I do. I proved at the strip, get better and more consistent times if I let PCM do the thinking instead of me.

It takes skill to shift an automatic? I have had a dozen manual cars and trucks and bought an automatic C5 so I don't have to shift anymore.

Fine, great, drive what you like. I'm just pointing out my purpose in this thread has nothing to do with your snarky 16 year old pretending comment.

On a twisty road, I'll pull it down a gear or two to keep the revs and power up . . .unless you really abuse it- there's no way you'll hit the rev limit or toast anything. That flexibility is the fun part of owning these c5s IMO.

that all depends on what you have in front of it ....... see post 17

Oh ....I drive mine by setting in competitive driving mode and mashing down the pedal not boring if you have the right stuff up front

Sorry.

Just remember how fragile the tranny cable and bushings are when you slam it into the gears.

anyway the question wasn't should I sell my auto and get a manual... he has an auto.. end of..

OP : as I've said , put in D for cruising, traffic.. when you want to let loose, shirt.. two different cars! be careful from 1 to 2 as it can snap a bit.. but great fun..

If I was you I would put trans temps on your DIC screen, as it can warm up.. If I were you I would do two things

do a mail order tune, wakes up shifts, and firmness
fit a trans oil cooler .. just in case.. nothing wrong with dropping thise temps anyway..

then get out and play.. practice , get the feel of it .. trust me it is good fun..

I have a Z now, but loved my auto.. for different reasons.. and from a launch its quick..

I can't remember the last time i put it in D and stayed there. Guess I should have bought a stick but wife would have been pissed. Not that it matters, had it 18 months and she has yet to drive it.

The A4 tranny has 1,2,3 D use them probably not 1 I use mostly 2,3 D to help control car on hills etc.

To be honest, I have only seen anyone manually shift an automatic transmission once. A woman was taking me on a test drive of her 1995 Camaro Z28. The experience was jerky, abrupt and not very enjoyable. Plus, I thought the transmission was going to fall out of the bottom of the car.

Assuming the 4l60e in the Vette works the same as my Tahoe, keep in mind how the gears in chosen. My Vette has the M6, so I have no first hand experience there.

1: only 1st is used
2: only 2nd is used
3: 1, 2, 3 are used (OD is locked out)
D: all 4 are used.

So in other words, don't use 2 thinking it will use 1 and 2, giving you great off the line launches.

Accelerating - I see no point in manually shifting. It shifts at appropriate RPMs on its own.

It's weakness is it never changes down as you decelerate (for example, for a corner). When you want to accelerate again, it's always in too tall a gear until you mash the gas pedal, and even then it is very slow to change down. It is sometimes annoying when you want to pass someone on a 2 lane road.

Again, this is its behavior in a truck. I don't know if it's behavior is different in a Vette.

Boom! Laz is smelling what I'm cooking! Seriously this was a main concern of mine.
