Default Would Modding a C5 Ruin its Value?

i been looking at c5's online and noticed when looking for a lower cost one with higher miles i'm not seeing a automatic in yellow. so was wondering if having one recolored or adding a aftermarket radio even would totally ruin it.

on a side note, i been wondering if getting a c5 financed is even possible.

Thanks in Advance:
Alice

modding is going to cause some buyers to shy away, however it will cause some buyers to flock to it so they dont have to do said upgrades.

with that being said i dont think modding a vette will change the value much. it just depends on which buyer shows up at your door step.

can you get a vette financed? yes i am sure you can. my bank will finance anything that is 20 years or younger. of course the interest rate will reflect.

Hope this helps.

Modding in and of itself will probably not lower the car's value; BUT, if you end up modding the car, you can expect about 20% of the mod value returned. That 20% is probably on the high side.

Eg.

$20k car + $20k in mods might get you $25k with the right buyer.

If modding is what you want to do, by all means go for it. Buy the car and make it how you want it to be. These cars are really not in a collector status so just enjoy it. A number of owners have installed aftermarket radios in their car to give it more usable features and a more modern look.

As for a repaint to a different color, a lot will depend on the quality of the work and the color chosen.

Check with a place like a Credit Union on financing. I've found them to have better terms and loan policies than many big banks.

I depends on the mods and the quality of the installation. On a high mileage C5, mods probably will have less effect on resale as the mileage will most likely place value in a narrow price range.
Relative to the mods you mentioned (paint & radio) it would make more sense to wait for the color C5 you're looking for as a good quality paint job can be very expensive and blow out of the water any "deal" you got on a high mileage C5 of another color.
Increase the base price you're willing to pay upfront and get what you want. Adding an aftermarket radio can be done easily!

PROPERLY "recoloring" a C-5 Corvette will probably cost almost as much as the purchase of the car. If having a yellow Corvette is a high priority to you, I'd continue to look for one that was yellow from birth.....

It's all about the mods and the next buyer.

Some mods IMO definitely lower the value! There was a C3 at a car dealer really cheap! Painted lime green, extended fenders and wide racing tires on it. It looked really "different". But if the right buyer walks in.

Radios won't lower the value unless it looks esthetically wrong. Some have upgraded and changed the bezel and it looks like it came from the factory that way. That's what I would consider. Not the $199 elcheapo radio.

And you can use autotrader to search for yellow, automatic C5s !!!!!! Buy it the color you want it.

Just for grins 'n giggles I plugged into "cargurus.com" a minute ago. They have 164 yellow C5's for sale across the country. Take a look. Anytime you go with modded cars you are taking a risk. Just my two cents. Best wishes! Back again, forgot the financing question. You might want to take a look at "Lightstream". They will finance older cars, up to 100 %, with extended terms at low rates for folks with good credit. I know people who have used them and they were extremely satisfied.

Changing a color of any car is expensive if done right. Just painting a car is expensive if you want a nice job with quality paint. No way on earth to do that on a budget. Look for one on color you want.

The radio is no big deal as long as it is of equal or better quality than stock.

Good luck

Ps. These cars can be a bit expensive to maintain as there is a corvette tax for sure.
So keep that in mind when buying... that the initial purchase is just the beginning.

I know it's along way from you and it has a few miles on it, but it is what you are looking for.

glad to hear all the advice, thanks everyone. if i can i hope to find a yellow one off the back if i can. there is a really good body shop that i know of in tulsa, ok called Unique Collision Of Tulsa. they are the only local shop id trust with a vette. they do full frame off restorations and complete car builds. they build a lot of elenor mustangs for example. but when i finance my vette through my credit union, i plan to pay it off before i would possibly recolor it.

i wouldn't install a cheap radio for sure. im thinking something nice like a kenwood exchelon.

Welcome to the Forum, Alice!
Sounds like you know exactly what you want - that's great. If you haven't already, check the stickies for the C5. Lots of great information that will make you a better informed buyer.
Best wishes with the search for Your Corvette! Once you find it, please post some pictures.

many mods are done by backyard mechanics with little or no mechanical expertise..I would not touch! Just read some of the threads for conformation.

Given the title of this thread, I can see it getting off-topic from the OPs questions in a real hurry...

Yep! I've destroyed my resale value and I'm loving it!

Buy it for you. Drive it for you. Mod it for you. In the end the numbers will equal out. Don't buy it for the next guy. You may not get a dollar for dollar return on the mods, but you will enjoy YOUR car.

I have mine insured through NCM at an agreed on value.

I LOVE those rims

Modding in and of itself will probably not lower the car's value; BUT, if you end up modding the car, you can expect about 20% of the mod value returned. That 20% is probably on the high side.

Depending on the mod determines the rate of return. I generally use the factor of just 10%. I think your mention of adding a aftermarket radio (esp if you are going double din) will get you a 25% return. Things like a supercharger will get you a 10% return. Some on this forum will even argue a supercharger will DECREASE the value of a car. My personally experience differs.
P.S. If you want a yellow Vette, find a yellow Vette. MUCH cheaper than painting.

They aren't worth much on Seale to begin with. I have a super clean 2004 vert with 90k miles that is worth about $11k on a god day. I decided to just keep it.
