Well, I'm finished and boy am I glad I opened up this original forum page. Have wanted to change the tails on my vert for some time and I am so glad I did it. Took a couple of hours but, that ain't bad for an old fart (76 yrs old). Lol..
Switch backs were a breeze. I didn't do the black background or the "halo lights". Maybe later. Thanks for all the great info and links to the lites etc. I' can't figure out how to attach photos so, you'll have to use your imagination. Lol

See Post #65: "I used flexi-coat, similar to plasti-dip. The reason I used that is it is non-permanent (can be peeled off) and it is definitely non-conductive. You are spraying directly onto electrical components since some electronic resistors are exposed."

Led Tails
Hey, how long did you guys cut the red led strips? Just waiting for delivery of the Red strips. Paint and straws all set, just waiting to start. Need measurement for cutting the LEDs. Help!

Andy, you contribution to this thread is what makes this forum so great. I almost bought a set of the led’s but wanted to read this first. I’ve fooled with LEDS before, namely bottom of the door puddle lights, electrified door reflectors and lights surrounding the trunk.
- When you painted the reflector black, how did you use the straws to mask the led’s?
- Since I don’t have the lights in front of me, its hard to see the ‘channel’ where you put the led strip. I see from the link they are regular top emitting led strips. They are not that flexible in certain directions. Can you expand on that?
- What glue did you put the lights back together with?

1. Did not do anything special with them, I just needed to mask the LEDs from the plasti-dip coating. The straws from Starbucks just happened to be about the right diameter to protect them from spray. Equally you could not mask them and then pick off of the paint from the leds later, but that would be a hassle.
2. You right the Leds are not flexible is all directions like, say, string. Inside the housing that holds the backlight is a ‘wall’ that runs around the inside of the oval shape. I just glued the strip to that. So to be clear the leds are NOT pointing out towards the back of the car, they are pointing inwards towards themselves, like a circular firing squad ;-). That gives more than enough diffused light to be a taillamp.
3. Black silicone sealant was perfect. Got it from Home Depot for a few bucks.
I’ll try and post a photo, but on iphone at Starbucks right now.
Good luck!

Hello Chasboy

The straws from Starbucks just happened to be about the right diameter to protect them from spray. Equally you could not mask them and then pick off of the paint from the leds later, but that would be a hassle. Apparently the Starbucks straws are a smaller diameter than the ones we buy for the house.

I just glued the strip to that. So to be clear the leds are NOT pointing out towards the back of the car, they are pointing inwards towards themselves, like a circular firing squad ;-). That gives more than enough diffused light to be a taillamp. Sure seems that way, if they weren’t bright enough they would never have shown up in the pic. Did you use the same location to ‘exit’ the strip wires?
3. Black silicone sealant was perfect. Got it from Home Depot for a few bucks. I have some black RTV, I’m sure that will be fine.
Good luck!Andy
