Thoughts on owning two C5s?
Long story short, I've got one that's pristine; a garage queen...
...that I LIKE KEEPING a garage queen. It's a 2000 Coupe Red/Red/Red that has 19,000 miles on it, and is bumped up to 500+HP. It was my Father's car that he ordered, and now I own it. Occasionally he visits, and I love the smile on his face when he gets in it at 77+ years old. I just took the cover off as I plan to drive it for this weekend for the first time in a month or two, and when I opened the door, it still has that new car smell; can't beat it--17 years after the fact!! This was last year @ Carlisle:
Now, I've had this car on a track, once; and while I LOVED it, I am not going to do it again. I am getting interested in NASA events, HPDE & racing. I have several friends that run in the Camaro-Mustang Challenge class. A friend of mine loaned me a 1992 Camaro CMC car, that I rejuvenated in exchange; and now definitely have the "track car" bug!!
I don't know if I want to go all the way to a competition license, and wheel-to-wheel racing in CMC, but it's probably the best fun/dollar class outside of Spec Miata racing in SCCA. I have been looking at CMC cars, and can likely pick one up for less than $10K, ready to run/race/HPDE, etc. I am looking at another one this week/weekend.
But I've also now seen a couple of later model 2003/2004 Z06s for under $20K and under 100K miles, which I'm thinking about turning into a track car, primarily for HPDE, and maybe TT (Time Trial) events. I'm not experienced enough to consider racing it in American Iron Extreme, not yet at least.
Am I crazy for considering owning 2 C5 Corvettes????
If I commit a ZO6 for primary track duty, but barely street legal (maybe to take to Cars & Coffee and make a lot of racket); could one actually "let it go" a bit; and not care about chips, dings, and track rash---and goodness forbid... getting dirty???? (Rhetorical question, I know.) I know I'm just venting thoughts here, but if I ask my GF, she will tell me "you know you will baby the damn thing" like I do everything else I own.

Definitely not crazy. I want another c5 too for exactly the same reason. My car is a driver, but its about as nice as a driver can be.
I actually want one that can be a solid daily driver, and one that I can make a little more crazy.

I'd never have 2 if both for street use. But if I were to track a car I'd definitely consider it.

Go for it Life is no dress rehearsal. It sounds like a great plan to keep the garage queen your Dad owned and have a Z06 for track days. I wish I got into track days alot sooner. Just did my first track days over the last couple of years and love it. It can get very expensive but worth it if you can swing it.
Just do it

Get the second C5 and mod away for track use. You'll have a blast.

I've had two C5s for about 6-7 years now. I'm the original owner of a 2002 and she is my "show" car. 6-7 years ago I purchased a 98 with a whopping 767 RWHP to be my "go" car. I enjoyed the hell out of that car but sold the car back in late May. I was going nuts without a C5 daily driver so about 3 weeks ago, purchased a 99 with 617 RWHP. Not as fast as the 98 and in no where near the great condition of the 98 but for a daily driver, the 99 suits me fine. I don't ever see a future without two Corvettes, my 2002 and some other. Maybe a mid-engine C8 someday?
My 02:
My old 98, I still miss her
My new to me 99:
Anyhow, I definitely think you should do two C5s, one to keep pristine and one to beat on the track.

01 z06 that is in really awesome condition, i got a little carried away modding it so its now relegated to Mexico Trips and nice weekends
so i decided to do the same thing, buy another c5 that i call my beater vette.
this is my old 97 coupe that was just that, ended up selling to fund the rebuild and upgrade of the white vette when she blew her motor

I ended up missing having a second vette so i found my current 00 coupe, which was a STEAL!

and here they both are chilling

Keeping the red one is a no brainer if it puts a smile on your fathers face.... that is priceless and I would keep it just for that reason alone. Plus, it is a nice looking car.

It is great having 2. The Coupe is a semi daily driver now, almost 140K, paint is not so great anymore, but it is still a blast to drive. The Z16 is the weekend cruiser.
