11.727 New Best ET, 02 Z06 with Halltech Tric and Drag Radials
Fun day at Maryland International Raceway (MIR) in Budds Creek, Maryland. We turned out about 10 C5s including seven Z06s. Track was a well prepped and we finally got some air that was under 2000 feet DA.
My car is an '02 Z06 with only mod a Halltech Tric cold air intake (using Jim Hall's "PowerStack" air cleaner) and BFG drag radials. My previous best with this configuration was 11.823 @ 117.59 at 2200' DA.
First run today was 11.774 @ 115.97
Third run was 11.780 @ 116.25
My final run of the day was 11.727 @ 116.34. The splits were:
60'..........1.706
330'........4.914
660'........7.535 @ 95.20
1000'......9.810
1320'....11.727 @ 116.34
The density altitude at the time of this run was 1600 feet.
My other four runs were in the 11.8s and low 11.9s, except one....
I took a Forum member in the right seat on one pass just for orientation and to demonstrate burnout and line procedure and that, when running on drag radials, shifting is a violent act. The guy added 230 pounds to the car's race weight. I roughly calculated that the weight was like giving up 30 hp. I expected to lose three tenths. Ran a 12.09 @ 115.06. Better than I expected. With that experience in mind, I won't worry so much in the future about removing the floor mats to save weight. Probably worth noting too that my gas tank today was between a quarter and a half. Not optimal.
So I am looking forward to running again in November (the 9th at MIR) in what ought to be better air.
Edit: Adding two action pics from a video of the run, plus the complete time slip.

I'll try to scan and post the time slip on that run tomorrow since I was in the other lane running a paltry 11.93. You and Powershifter are making me look bad!
You and your car were "on" today. I am very impressed with your MPH in the 1/8 mile. 95 mph is nothing to sneeze at. Excellent 60ft, too.
If the weather is decent next Saturday, we will be able to put a horsepower number on the time.
Congrats, John.

Thanks guys for the kind remarks. These Z06s respond well to drag radials and a cold-air intake. I suspect that Jim Hall still has a few Halltech Trics on the shelf and ready to ship.
Steve Row, thanks. Your walking me at the lights forced me to make a very clean run and you still got me by a few hundreths at the far end. Thanks for scanning and posting the slip here and at the other forum.
See ya at dyno day.

Ross, my MPH was 115.xx on all four runs.
Finally got the pictures to post. See below.

I'm posting this from the companion thread on the drag racing board for those who don't frequent that one.
In response to a question on launch secrets...I wrote:
I'm not sure I have any secret....
I'm running the BFGs on 12" wide wheels.
They produce pretty consistent low-mid 1.7Xs on a prepped track. If I don't get them properly heated, they give 1.8Xs. That takes some care, since I don't have a line lock. But I'm spinning them in 2d gear at about 6000 until they produce good smoke and start to grab.
When they are properly heated, they also hook the shift to 2d better and produce good 60-to-330 incremental times (sub 3.20), which is a major component of a really strong run.
When I get the 1.70X 60's, my launch rpm is usually 4100-4200. I haven't run it higher but probably will before the season ends. I go for a full clutch engage in the first 4-10 feet of movement; that's a pretty quick release but not a pop. I refrain from riding the clutch up into first gear.
I change the fluid in my clutch hydraulics reservoir weekly and also within a day or two of each dragstrip session. This is done to ensure the fluid is fresh and retains the spec boiling point. (system holds 16 oz; the reservoir holds 3 oz; I'm using DOT-3 fluid). My experience with the 01 Z06 was that launches will progressively cook the clutch fluid. Since adopting this fluid-changing routine on the 02, my clutch pedal has remained normal through 70 or so passes.
So no magic here. Just some basic practices that seem to work.

Good post
I agree with you on the clutch fluid issue. My pedal starts to feel soft after a few passes and I am not even doing a burnout. I would not be surprised if my stock clutch took a dump soon. From what I have seen the stock Z06 clutches are marginal at best.

Great times Ranger, thanks for posting - I am green with envy.
I agree 100% on the fluid change in the clutch resevoir. It takes about 2 minutes and IMO worth its weight in gold if you race the car. I do mine with each oil change and before and after each race. I do the brake resevoir at oil changes and before and after road racing. So far the clutch has held up.

Is this you (left lane) vs Ranger (right lane)?
You are certainly running more MPH than you were at ETown.
Ranger's car is making some serious power.

The most interesting power number that I calculate for each run is the 330'-to-1320 incremental time. It takes the launch out of the equation and includes the shifts to 3th and to 4th where traction is less of an issue, especially on drag radials. This is the portion of the run where power is hooked and better measured.
My 330'-to-1320' on this run was 6.813 seconds. Four of my other runs were within 2 hundredths of that time. This was at 1600' DA. In September my four fast runs (same day) were 6.870-6.880 at 2200' DA.
My Halltech Tric sucking cooler outside air through its PowerStack filter is producing good results in this segment of the run.
So as the air improves this Fall, that 330'-to-1320' time should drop further. And the ET should improve accordingly, assuming, of course, I can manage some decent launches and hook the shifts to 2d (all in that first 330').
This is just another way of looking at key components of what makes for fast runs.

11.727 - 4.914 = 6.813

Very impressive runs indeed. You make alot of mention regarding the halltech tric and filter sucking in that cool air and improving your times. I think it would be pretty interesting to see what you would run under similar conditions if you put your stock box back on. I am just curious how much difference in e.t. and mph the intake makes. Way to go.
