Those who went from MGW shifter to???
Thinking about swapping out my MGW for something else and wanted some opinions from those that went from the MGW to what other shifter...
I like the notchiness of the MGW, but its still very stiff after several years of use....maybe I'm getting old, but was thinking of swapping to something with less effort...
Thanks....

Unfortunately, your's is a common problem. Everybody reads that the stock shifter is bad, so they replace it with complete junk. Over and over..........it is SO common on this board.
Remember "Ranger" was arguably, the top drag racer on the forum. His C5 had a stock shifter....................if I remember correctly.

I have not tried the MGW but changed my stock shifter on my Z to a B&M. I enjoy shifting it so much more. It feels precise and compact, not like I am driving an old dump truck!

I have a cheap Ralco short throw shifter from an online auction site on 1 1999 C5 and a MGW on another. Surprisingly I find the Ralco shifter to be smoother and easy to operate. Both cars have 2 washer anti-venom mod which made both shifters more pleasant to use.
The Ralco has a shorter throw, but may not have the longevity of the MGW. If I were doing it again, I would probably just run the Ralco as I can't see many opportunities for failure in either device.

Some people like Hinson. I tried a Fidanza at Carlisle and was pretty impressed. I’ve only driven one c5 with a c6Z shifter ad I understand why people like it. I’ve cut the shaft on both of my C5’s, the Z was cut 1 3/4” and the current pewter coupe is 2”. Shift **** now looks like an egg in a basket, but I love the action. I have a single washer in the back but going by Ruffy’s remarks I may try a second.

I bought a C5 with an MGW shifter installed.
I hated it. It was very stiff. It was even stiff going side to side and frequently I would have trouble getting it all the way over to 1st.
I like the short throws and how precise it felt.
For me the solution was the anti venom mod. I put 1 washer in and it became much more enjoyable to drive. It is still precise and short throws, but the effort is greatly reduced.
Now it is a shifter that I really like.
Good luck with yours.

I came from a Breathless shifter that came on the car from the previous owner, mostly didn't like how noisy it was since it had a big gap around the shifter letting in lots of road noise. The MGW feels better and is quieter. AFAIK, it's the most pricey shifter you can put on a C5 so there's not really "upgrading" to something else. Most shifters are just the top part without a new lower box. I changed up to the MGW race shift **** and that helped too. Wasn't a fan of the cue ball shifter it had on it.

The MGW with the solid shaft did not work for me. Throw was too short, effort too high, and it started to bother my 65yr old wrist as there was NO cushion going into gear. My solution was to modify an OE shaft (made it considerably shorter) and mate it to the MGW box. Throws are s little longer (so what?) .... but effort is lower and there is a slight cushion. I also added one washer to the detent. Also switched to a C4 ****. Perfect setup for me. Love it now!
