Mine needs to be redone, too. Did you strip yours, prior to the fresh coat of paint? If so, what stripper (paint stripper, that is!!) did you use?

O.K., I am very, very impressed -- but... have to ask, why not have an original plate filler in for the new paint?

Looks great! Could I ask a couple questions? Could you tell me what the cost was? Did you remove the bumper cover before the repaint. If you're not comfortable with posting the cost I understand. Really does look excellent.

If they butt matched that, they did a great job!

RE: stripping the factory paint. Unless the factory paint is cracked to the urethane, I personally would not strip it. The best base for a repaint is the factory paint - it adheres to the bumper better than any bodyshop can do. You just can't duplicate factory paint adhesion.

Of course there are circumstances where you would want to strip paint but if it is chips and scuffs, not a chance. Just my two cents. I have repaired, replaced, prepped, and painted 100's of bumper covers.

Looks like the body shop did a great job repairing the fascia and the color match is excellent.

Understand your point, but my concern is too much paint, on a semi-flexible bumper, becoming "brittle" and later flaking off.

Looks great. I'm sure many on the Forum would love to do this to their C5. I know my 99 needs it.

So Ill answer everyone's questions:

1) I did not do this myself, I paid to have it done by a guy who has been painting Vettes for 38 years.

2) I dont know what procedure he followed for this job but I can tell you, he did remove the front bumper - he does not work on cars if you want to keep body parts on the car - he refuses to do paintwork by taping the area...which is why I used him.

3) I was quoted $1000 (+/-) by 3 other local shops (all with very good reputations) - BUT - all 3 said "I hate working on Corvettes" - which was a deal killer for me...I want a guy who LOVES working on Corvettes. When I went to this guys shop, there was 1 C7, 2 C3s, and 1 C2 right there on the shop floor - I just knew I was in the right place.

4) I was quoted $700 by this guy if I provided the new front C5 emblem - which I got on EBay for $75 (he was $110 more if he provided the emblem) - and asked if I paid him cash what could he do - he brought his price down to $605 AND that included readjusting my rear lid as the one corner was raised up a bit - now that's fixed too.

5) Im not a fan of the original bumper plate filler - I wanted something to make mine look a little different at car shows...

Paint match looks perfect and you got a very good deal IMO. Something to consider in the future...

You got a great deal and it looks like a new one. I got a quote at a local shop for $950.00 to do the job.

I ended up refinishing it myself and cost me about $200.00 for the paint and materials.

Great price! It cost me about 300 bucks to do mine myself including sand paper, paint and fixing cracks. Plus a new paint gun in the cost. Did not match perfectly but good enough for a non show car and pretty near daily driver.

Does this pretty much mean that the original emblem is usually destroyed when being removed?

Not if you heat it up and use fishin string. But then you have to re glue it or cut some fine strips of double sided tape to get it back on.

Looks great! And the price you paid sounds like a great deal.

That's a very good price. If you took any, it would be nice to see before and after pics.

Looks nice! Painting is something I've never conquered, so congratulations to you and zachaeous.

Getting the emblems off is not too difficult; getting them back on - to stay - is another story!

The guy at the body shop said to get a new emblem for (2) reasons:

1) A new emblem just finishes off the look of the clean new paint job better than an older emblem.

2) He said "sometimes" the emblem doesn't come off clean or can crack upon removal - so its just easier to have a new one ready to go.

He gave me the original emblem, and it had a very thin residue of double sided tape left on the back...which took a while to clean off. He did say that he used fishing line to remove it.

I'm in Delaware and would love to know who did the work for you. I have a few things I need done on mine.
