Not an apple fan, but love following stuff like this. I will likely have to do something similar with an android tablet in the SLC when the time comes.

You might want to consider integrating one of soundman.ca's slider kits. I had an android tablet installed permanently in my prior Corvette. It worked great during the cooler months. During the summer time, the high heat would kill the battery life way down and there wasn't enough time to fully charge it back up on my short commute.
If I installed another tablet, I'd use a slider kit. When installed properly, it looks permanent, but it pops out real easily. You can take the tablet in to work or your home with you.
Here is the link to his site and a demo video:

Best of luck to you however you proceed.

Nice fitment. I'm actually planning to do this myself this winter, but with an Amazon Fire HD 6 (Android-based) tablet which should fit the space without having to modify the center console. It's a smaller tablet but will serve it's purpose to both modernize the interior, as well as provide some nice features. The only thing is, there will be some extra room on the sides, but filler panel will close up that extra space.
Quick question- are you planning to keep the stock radio behind the tablet, and then use a 3.5mm audio cable to put sound from the tablet to the radio? My main concern here is not having enough room behind the radio to push it back further into the cavity- is there enough space for the radio behind the tablet? Also how will you control volume, and other essential functions on the stock radio if it's hidden behind?

From the first time I saw a DD mod (or sim) I wondered why nobody would replace the radio and heater controls with an android tablet of some sort.
Dash area = not bad looking
Radio = ugly
Heater controls = ugly
Somebody figure out a way to replace both with one unit and some sort of interface... a real tech savvy guy who used to work at my day job said he could do it (I believe it, he could modify the DOS, Access systems here way beyond what I thought possible).

I rode Harleys for 40 years and attend after market shows for ideas and new products for the market....One vendor made a fairing for an IPAD and also included the electrical components so the IPAD gave you all the engine data, ie, Revs, Speed, Oil Pres...
Great setup........

So how does the music get to your speakers? Also if the USB port is being used to power/charge the pad, is there another way to use a thumb drive filled with music?

I'm actually changing the ***** on the HVAC unit with nice, generic/universal ones I found on ebay. This will hopefully hold me over until I figure out a way to re-face/reskin the entire ugly thing.

No need for a thumbdrive- you can store music directly on the tablet. Ipads are rudimentary, but with Android tablets you can add SD cards directly to the tablet for more storage (ie. 128GB+). You can even have your stored music sync with the cloud service of your choice when you arrive home, because your tablet in the car will be connected to your home's wifi.

I'll let the OP speak for himself, but easiest way to get music to speakers would be run a 3.5mm audio cable to the stock head unit (with aux input mod- see this thread) or aftermarket head unit that already has an aux input.

So you're saying there's no room behind the head unit to push it farther back into the cavity/opening? Even if you cutoff the side brackets on the stock radio?
