Decided to address rim barrel
Winter maint job...
I read the threads where people stripped the barrel paint to expose the chrome, the thread should have mentioned to do this only if rims are not pitted and are in excellent condition on the barrels...
Anyways, I stripped it and it look like crap, the chrome was pitted and I could not leave it like that. I made some calls yesterday to 3 local powder coat places and all three said that they will need to redo the entire rim @ $125.00 each.
The face of the rims are really nice so I decided to sand prime, paint and clear coat and see how it goes.

After the strip down of the first wheel and aborting that process, I did this to the rest:
1) I washed the barrels
2) decreased them
3) wire brushed them
4) wheel sanded them
5) cleaned with mineral spirits
6) 3 coats of that primer
7) 3 coats of wheel paint
8) 2 coats of clear
This is fine for me, the inside barrel is not that noticeable, as long as it is clean.

I think the most important thing for anyone looking to do this is to make sure the painted barrel is near perfection before deciding to remove the paint and keep it chrome.
Powder coating is only any option if you want the entire rim redone at $125.00 or better
I like perfection but no way that is was going to happen with severe pitting.
This is fine, would like to see how yours came out! Sounds really nice!

I know, I realized this when stripping, this is why I didn't go crazy, I am hoping 3 coats of clear will hold out for this weekend driver until I decide what to do next.
Then again, I know people that dont even clean the barrels! the original paint was a flat gray, at brake dust magnet!

Mine were not painted, so they were pitting and getting unremovable watermarks. When I got the the abrasive fiber (like wire) wheel on it, the pitting turned to a blemish, so paint was the only answer. I < think> I took a pic or 2, but it likely wont be spring till I can take a good pic.
