I'm going to go against the grain here...

I love my C5, but with the current prices of C6's I would just go for a C6 instead. Overall better platform, just saying.

Before I get people trashing on me, don't get me wrong, I love my C5 and am pretty invested in it, and I got it for a smoking deal, but those deals have now fallen on C6's, hence one of the reasons why I say go for a C6.

so I looked at hard at those when I bought the C5.....my preference was for the analog controls vs the digital controls in cars I drive.

my new DD car that has the GUI screen is a PITA.....I prefer ***** and buttons to touch screens.....just my preference, but that 08 or 09 c6 that has the 435 hp engine was getting me all excited for sure....

If I was looking to buy a Corvette right now I would also go with the C6.

Nothing wrong with that thinking, makes sense. At this point some of us could afford a C6 or 7, but for me its about which one I like the best. At this point it is C5 for many reason I won't get into.

You bet, I like both platforms, am open to either and understand the value difference. I'm trying to learn from the guys who own them, but don't want to engage in a C5 vs C6 debate.

Thanks for the post but...

Yikes! The car is dirty and the drivers floor has snow on the carpet?

However, that is the correct direction. I guess I'm spoiled in Texas.

The knucklehead could have at least cleaned it up a bit for the pictures.

I have to agree with you ! My 1998 is solid and runs better than new!

Hey all.... This one caught my eye. Some have warned to stay away from mods however this appears pretty squared away. This guy has the same ad on Ebay and on a Dallas CL

So... 1) run away and keep looking, 2) negotiate to $XXX or 3) hop a plane to Stillwater tomorrow!

Depends what kind of Vette you want. Most will be in your price range.

For 18K you should be able to get a C5 Coupe in very good condition with low mileage.
You should be able to get a C5 Convertible in good condition with mid range (40-60K) mileage.
You should be able to get a C5 Z06 in good condition with 50K plus miles.

If you want max. performance, choose the Z06. If you want a drop top, then there's only one way to go.

If you want to cruise with a removable top, then the Coupe is your answer.

I agree with the others, you are better off with an 01 and up.

Best of luck and happy hunting.

From ad:
You can slam thru all the gears and still be peeling the tires out in 3rd gear.
It wasn't driven by a little old lady to church.

This is not a heavily modded car. FROM THE AD, it looks quite nice. Might be different in person

Good post, and to add to it, if you are looking for a specific color or model (FRC, convertible, Targa top), it's going to take a lot longer to find the one you want if you're only looking at '01 and newer models. By only looking for the newer ones, you're eliminating half of the C5s that were built...

That is a beautiful C5 Dave. I can't believe you haven't sold it yet...if you still have it when I'm ready to buy, I'll take it!

Bill, I can't comment on the mods on that particular car, but as I read this thread I was going to recommend that you look at a C5 Z06. Almost every expert agrees that these cars have bottomed out in terms of depreciation and will soon begin to appreciate in value. Owning a C4 ZR1 I know this is something you value. Also, like the ZR1, the C5 Z06 was the king of it's day. Commemorative edition 2004s are the most valued of this group. If I was in your shoes, with the kind of bucks you're looking to invest, I'd look for a 04 Commemorative. If that doesn't work out, I'd still go for a C5 Z06 over any C5 or C6 in your $30K range.

Thanks roadbike!

First, I'm having fun learning about the nuances of the platform from articles, members comments and talking with people. I'm definitely interested in the Z06 (02-04) and the CE is up on my list.

I am having a hard time determining what exactly the differences are in the CE verses a "regular" Z06? I see the lemans blue (my wife likes that color) and I see CE cars with stripes and some with stripes delete?

I ask as that my basis for understand the C5 CE is that Chevrolet built the '96 GS (which was a C4 platform), a LT4 engine, admiral blue with a white "up and over" stripe, wider tires adn rear flares-- but was essentially a 96 LT4. Lots of flash but no real differences over a "base" LT4.... did history repeat with the C5 CE?

I'd hate to pay a premium for vinyl tape and badging, however in C4 world, the GS seems to be appreciating, so maybe something to consider?

I sold my '15 Challenger yesterday so I'm actively on the hunt! BTW the Challenger is a very cool ride.

I sold my perfectly good ‘02 C5Z for a ‘12 SRT8. GREAT car but I felt ‘homeless’ after a year since I’m an active member of my corvette club.
Sold THAT and now have my pewter coupe which I love. I know from whence you came!
The people on this forum know A LOT of stuff about these cars.
The CE is only a trim package, lots of sauce but no sizzle. I’m not sure if the Z16 option which came with polished wheels is any different. The major difference is between the Z and the Coupe. Aside from the obvious difference in the body, there’s lots of important differences between the 2, as you’ve Already read. If I could have gotten another Z, I would have but I went for the best car for the money at the time, which is my used car philosophy. I like the color better than my black Z, and the seats and storage. Get the best car you can afford and if it meets other important criteria youre in good shape!
