Well, I believe you, BUT when I bought my 04 Z06, I drove it from Detroit to Richland, Washington, via Houston and California. I averaged about 23 to 25 mpg for the whole trip, although I did average (nearly) 30 mpg on some of the legs. SO.....I must assume that A) y'all don't drive as fast as I do, or B) perhaps you are running 30" rear tires, or C) your odometers could be slightly optimistic.
I actually didn't drive "that fast" and never over (um) xxx.xx mph.

99 mn6 z51 car, lots of short around town driving & winter conditions (longer warm ups) has me down to 18.5 on dash, I'll bring that up to 24ish with a one hour hiway blast to see the lady friend.

In in the summer, 22 around town easily, 28+ on the Hiway. I don't baby it, but don't go full hotrod (often)

I get around 14mpg with my '69 Judge, a littler better if it's downhill both ways.

I've only had my 03 since September and only put about 750 miles on it so this might not be a good example. I'm set up like yours (A4/3.14) and I'm about the same on the highway. Around town I'm at about 21 mpg.

'02 Z06 with Maggie supercharger 26 to 27 mpg on the highway all day long and twice on Sunday. I am not sure what axle ratio I have though. The mileage the C5 gets is remarkable, yet I surely didn't buy it for that.

Bill it's awesome to still see you on here! such a great help for many. I have been back on here lately because I'm looking for another C5 Z06 for a driver. Now that mine has been turned full race since 2013. I was always impressed by the mileage mine would get 29-31 but didn't really appreciate it till I had a 911 turbo for the last 6 years for a daily, that car sucked so much gas it was annoying. Just one more thing that makes the C5 z such a easy car to live with. Very few people would believe me when I told them about the MPG.

But, you have to consider that

1940
Minimum Wage: $0.30 (today 0.30 worth of silver fetches approx. $4.20)
Gasoline price: $0.18 (Just shy of 2 silver dimes which would fetch $2.80 today)
Rent: $27 per month (27 silver dollars today fetches $404 and some change)

1950
Minimum Wage:$0.75 per hour (today 3 silver quarters fetch $10.50)
Gasoline: $0.27 per gallon (to fill a 20 gallon tank it was $5.40) (today that is a little over $3.50 for the silver quarter and 2 pennies per gallon)
Rent: $42 per month. (42 silver dollars @ todays value of $14.99 per coin is $629 and change)

1960
Minimum Wage: $1.00 (today that silver dollar is worth $14.99)
Gasoline: $0.31 per gallon (silver value today: approx $4.20
Rent: $71 per month ( 71 silver dollars fetch $1064 and some change today)

2014
Minimum Wage: $7.25 per hour. (Just over a silver half dollar ($0.50))
Gasoline: $3.66 (Just over a silver quarter of a dollar ($0.25))
Rent: $1282 national average (just over 85 silver dollars)

My first new car was a '71 Chevelle SS454. 4 speed manual tranny, 3:31 rear gear, and F60-15 tires. I could squeeze 15MPG out of it, if I could keep my foot out of it.

Right now? It's traveling 24,000 miles a day, at 1000mph, and isn't burning any gas, under cover in the garage. Over the last 17 years, 155,000 miles, it has averaged (with track and travel) 19 mpg.

Not really............we're simply stating that we can see 30 MPG from a car that can also go 0-60, in 3 seconds. Let's see some Prius do that!!!

True, true and true.

But I would speculate that when buying our Vettes, gas mileage was low on the priority list!
