Kidding aside, I think you should check your mileage the old fashioned way with several tanks of gas from different suppliers with similar type driving. I think you will have a little more data that is more accurate to draw the right conclusion.

Well said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Funny, MPG never entered my mind when I bought my C5. It's sort of like when I had my 40' diesel motorhome, and people would ask what the mileage was. You don't buy these vehicles for the MPG. You buy them for the DPQ. The "Driving Pleasure Quotient".

I have 0 complaints on the Shell Premium I use on my C5 except for the cost. But maybe something like this happen with the Chevron station you used. I used premium at a discount station for my Maxima almost all the time. Then I noticed that I was not getting the mileage on tank full’s that I was used to. It was at the level that I experienced when I put in Octane 87. So I switched to Hess Premium. The mileage returned to its previous normal. To prove I was not loony I went back to the discount station again using their premium and the mileage dropped. I called the State’s regulatory agency that tests the pumps requesting a test be done. They did and found a problem. Although the agency did not tell me what they found, I speculated the discount station was either mixing the premium with regular 87 or with 89.

I have already filled up three times in two weeks with this chevron.

I really think it is the gas, and not the gauge.
I tried the techron in the black bottle four different times, and it changed nothing.

Like I said(even with the chevron), once I drive for ten minutes, the gauge reads normally, until I get gas again.
With the 76, I get around 20 mpg around town, and 26 on the long hauls.

With this chevron, the gas seems to disappear with very few miles.
It reminds me of my R/T pickup.
That gets 12 around town, and 16 on longer trips.
This trip today in the Vette was like I was driving the pickup.
The car runs fine with both brands of gas,but there is a huge difference in mileage.
I will for sure be going back to the 76 gas.

Bob.
It is now time to call these guys...

In summation, there is nothing wrong with the fuel you are putting in your car. THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR CAR!

since you're some kind of math mortician why don't you do the math to tell me if it would be worth it for me to drive from NC out to California to fill up with union 76 gas instead of shell.

Fill the tank to the top, push a reset on one of the trip odometer readings, drive a good bit down to a quarter tank or lower. Fill up again and note the gallons then divide the mileage on the trip meter by the gallons used. Or keep guessing.

for the record I have no idea what my gas mileage is........I’m too lazy to do the math and my gas gauge doesn’t work....

When I mention "fill up", I am saying I fill the tank when it is still at 3/4 full.
I never let it get below 3/4 full.
So on that basis, using the 76, I only need to put 1/4 of tank in to fill it, twice a month.

With the chevron, I have already had to bring it to full three times in two weeks, and I am not driving any differently with the chevron, than I do with the 76.

When one is paying just under $4.00 a gallon for gas, that figures importantly into how far we can travel.
Gas here is on the average, $3.85 a gallon.
While driving yesterday, I spotted two different stations that were over $4.00 a gallon, in the San Gabriel valley.

I have never put anything in the car other than premium.
I think chevron is 92.

Default What gas milage what

Never use a Gas gauge in a older Corvette to determine gas mileage . Gas used miles driven is a only way to really see what you got .. I work on these old C-5s and the fuel system is well have to be a GM engineer to understand how they work .I have called GM to get info on the fuel system and how it really works on the C-5 ,This is what I get Bob is on vacation and will not be coming back and he is the only one that knows about this fuel deal so don't call back .. so gas used miles driven .OK then tell us about the wrong fuel we all are using ,I don't get it ..

As I said earlier, I don't let my tank get below 3/4 full.

My driving is pretty routine, in that I usually drive the same places(mostly on business) every day, so the way I tell what kind of mileage I am getting is, how long it takes to get the needle to come off the full mark to the 1/8th marker on the gauge.
With this chevron, that happened the very first day, in less than 30 miles.

With the 76, I can drive about 80 miles , and the needle is between full, and the 1/8 marker on the gauge.
This is the one time I am going to run the tank dry, so I can get that shitty chevron gas out of the tank.

Great idea Bob...then call us when you smell your fuel pump burning......if you don't smell it at first, try putting 2 gallons in at a time and run it dry as many times as it takes...that will get rid of the shitty Chevron for good

Wait a minute let me get something straight here. You fill up at 3/4 full. You've topped off 3 times with chevron. That means you've been slightly diluting the gas you already had in the tank, not ever having a full tank of chevron.

You still don't even have a full tank of chevron in the car. This is the most bogus thread I've ever seen.

Just spitballing here...but...it's my understanding that he DIC uses a calculation independent of the gas gauge when reporting average and current fuel economy. If that is correct, why even look at a known problematic gauge - why not compare mpg reading in the DIC.

Plus, the post above makes a great point.

Seems like anything would be better than using a known problematic gauge to base this on.

I misquoted in a post a while back.
When I first decided to use chevron, I let the tank run to just about empty, then filled it with chevron.
Since then, it get's filled when the gauge reads 3/4 full.
The tank has nothing but chevron presently.
Again, because I am going back to 76, I will let the tank get close to empty, and fill it with 76 from now on.

Obviously I never had this bad mileage thing, until I put chevron in the tank.

Bob.
