Default Anyone have experience with Car ID Dash Kits?

So my girlfriends dad got me a dash kit for Christmas for my 98' because the interior "looks bland and boring" according to him... He is a Mustang guy who does no performance upgrades to his car, just tacky visual things to the outside of his car.. I really didn't want to keep the kit because it's Navy blue, but my girlfriend insisted that I keep it because "he put in a lot of effort..."... I would have picked Carbon Fiber, (but I wasn't asked what I would want on MY OWN DAMN CAR!), Anyways, it's starting to warm up outside and he keeps asking me when I'm installing it... Has anyone ever installed one of these dash kits? Can they be removed easily without leaving any residue behind or ruining the leather interior? I'm debating just telling him it was a stupid idea because the kit is for an automatic car and I have a manual so that part of the kit won't be able to be used anyways and I fear it will look terrible with that piece missing..

So my questions.. Does anyone have experience using these dash kits or has seen them in person? Do they look good when put on? Can they be easily removed if I decide to hurt his feelings?

Thanks in advance.

Be gentle. Tell him you appreciate the thought, but it's just not for you.

The part about being gentle when you tell him is key - I certainly wouldn't say it was a stupid idea.

I have to remove them at work from time to time - I wouldn't do it. They look tacky and are a royal PITA to remove and clean up. GM plastics and "leather" are already pretty low quality, tack on 20 years and you're not gonna have a good time.

Idk, I'm very particular about my cars, especially the vette - but to each their own

It is YOUR car, not his.....grow a pair and tell him , "Thank you, I appreciate it, but.....(blah blah ...enter your favorite reason here...)

I certainly wouldn't modify/not modify my vehicles to avoid hurting someones feelings.......

Here is a link. It requires basically using a heavy adhesive and laying it over the current interrior/dash/ console..

If I had it my way I would have returned it.. but my girlfriend and her family are extremely sensitive and she wouldn't let me tell her dad I didn't like it so I was forced to keep it but I have never wanted to put it on my car.. I'm sure he will get pissed because he wasted his money on it, but like I said, he never asked me about it..

You would be doing them a favor. Time for them to grow up and not be so thin skinned.

That's what I was afraid you were going to say.. I'm not willing to put that on my car if it's not easily reversible.. Plus, I was looking at all the pieces last night and it looks like they give double of some pieces instead of enough to actually do the full dash/console area?

tell him they they sent double of some pieces and it's not all there & that you're going to see about returning it for a correct one.

If you're interested in the carbon fiber as you said, maybe they'll swap it for you?

You can always say that it didn't look right on the car, and that it would ruin the actual dash. I've seen one personally on a friend's car (wasn't a corvette though) and after a week of so in the sun some spots began to peel up and 3 weeks later tried to remove it. It took a while to get the **** off, even with goo be gone.

Make a list of everything you want for your car, and give it to everybody in your family. Guaranteed way not to have to deal with this again. They want buy you nothing. Tell mustang boy to stay out on your car.

Make sure you update us on the outcome. I'm curious how this "extremely sensitive" family will respond.

Yea there’s no way I’d ever put that in my car.. just come up with a good excuse to why you didn’t install it.. say a mustang driver down the street stole it from you or something

The solution is simple. Buy another C5, this time in automatic, and install the dash kit. Park it in a very visible spot so your GF's dad can see it. Leave the title signed inside the vehicle and never drive it again.

Of course.. The only logical thing.. Or I could go to a junk yard that has a wrecked Vette and install the dash kit on that car and send him pictures..

Hum, maybe a good warning signal from your girlfriend should you want to move forward on a more permanent relationship. She appears to be putting her dads feelings before yours. JMHO.
