Default At what point do you decide to sell your C5?

Guys I have had my C5 for several years. I love it. I got ripped off on a set of headers (long story), but proceeded with a mild set of bolt ons last summer. The car still needs the LS6 intake manifold installed that I bought over the winter, a good street tune and maybe an axle back. I have run a couple of 12.5-12.6's with it. (Vararam/headers only)

I've considered a cam, and dyno tune... but costs at local shops are in the thousands of dollar range.... as my car inches closer to 20yrs old

The first nail in the coffin was last Summer we bough a used 2015 Audi S3 for my wife...... i put a $600 APR tune on it and went to the track to see what was up. I ran almost 12 seconds flat..... this is our grocery getter. This is a little 4 door volkswagen based car.
I also picked up a 2018 honda civic Si 1.5T this spring as my new commuter car ... Hondata custom tune and downpipe only.... last Friday I ran 12.9 with it ..on my way home I averaged 42mpg ....the tune isnt finished .... i'm not kidding this car is tighter and better handling than the C5.

I'm just not really seeing a fit for the Corvette anymore. Its kind of really sad as thing was my childhood dream car.... There is/or maybe was a fair bit of hype going around with C5 on the internet the last few years ... but i think this is dropping off substantially....

Curious if others are feeling this. I'm kind of struggling between just selling it or just parking it and seeing how I feel next year...

Just kidding. It's a different animal for sure and the improvements made to sedans and sporty compacts as well as muscle cars over the last few years are impressive

But I like my C5 is rather easy to work on, inexpensive to maintain, a ton of information is available for it on the web, etc.

With new Mustangs at 460hp and the Camaro SS 1LE is a formidable street and track machine - I'd step into one of those before a Honda or Audi that runs 12s just because they run 12s.

Most of us didn't purchase a Corvette to race at the track. If your personal obsession is having low quarter mile times perhaps the C5 is wrong for you and it's time to sell. If you are happier in a fast Ricer go for it. On a quiet night in my younger days I could hear my DD Honda rust.

For me, the deciding factor was when it cracked that telephone pole in half using the frame just in front of my feet to do so.

I think all sports cars are works of art, but I'm just not into Picasso.

Most of the C5 Forum has effectively turned into textbook "Ricers" due to their unsatisfied love affair with gaudy accessories. I wouldn't call the S3 or a Civic Si a "Ricer" considering they are most likely out-performing most of this forum.

Roddy13:

The C5 is a dated car built by "old GM". I think it's amazing that I can go buy an APR tune and supercharger pulley for the 3.0T and make damn near 350-400rwhp without cracking open the engine- I sure as **** wouldn't use it as my dedicated track car because it is a nightmare to work on and locate parts.

The C5 won't be a money maker- so keep is as a dedicated track car and go nuts.

Besides, the newer cars are so full of electronics and useless leather- think of the pile of garbage you'd leave stripping it out.

For me the deciding factor would be if it becomes more of a chore and work then fun and exciting to see, drive and work on. Then it would have to go to someone else. I haven't reached that point and I don't ever seeing myself getting there either.

I just picked up my 16th (that's correct) Corvette in the last 44 years.
I have had C3s, C6s and one C7. This is my first C5.
At my age, I don't buy them to race. Don't need to.
My DD is a 17 Mustang GT convertible.
I buy Corvettes because I like them, they remind me of my youth and not everyone has or can even get one. If that makes me a snob, so be it.
I grew up when Route 66 was a weekly TV show. Fell in love with the concept and the car. I am glad I have done what I wanted.
If it gets to the day I can't or don't want the Vette anymore, at least I can look back and say "Glad I enjoyed them" rather than "wish I had enjoyed them".
Only you can decide if the time to get rid of the Corvette is now. It sounds like you expected the Vette to forever remain the fastest car on the road. Well, it isn't. Good luck with your decision whatever it may be.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Not sure on the ricer comment. I did buy my C5 for track use. I also recently sold my Viper which was tracked frequently. I do have an annual track membership and I do use my cars for open lapping and test & tune

I have put a fair bit of time into shopping for a C7, C7Z06.... but I’m leaning towards an R8 5.2 FSI Or an F-Type R....

I could see the C5 staying in the garage as well.

Thats why a C5 is seldom the only horse in the barn. Classic style and fun with good performance for relativley short money. If its already paid for it makes a great alternative to expensive to insure and maintain modern.

Try asking why old Harleys are preferred over more athletic bikes and get the same answer.

Hey - tastes change - in cars and women - if you’re not feeling it any more go with your gut - but don’t be sad when you look over your shoulder and see it drive away....

I think it is different for every owner. I sold my 99 when It hit 99,000 miles. But not until I had already found its replacement, my current 03 Anniversary.
But if it no longer excites you a bit every time you fire it up, then perhaps it is time.

I echo the above thoughts. I drove my first Corvette when I was 16 (couldn't afford it then ), but I was hooked, and as jaki30 said, they still remind me of my youth.
I don't drive a Corvette "because it's the fastest" because there will always be someone else faster. It may often be hot and sweaty working on or cleaning our Vette, but it is always rewarding, too. As mstromquist and 3sACROWD both say, if it ever gets to the point its not fun and rewarding to both my wife and me it will be gone. But, for now, it's still enjoyable to get in and go!
Best wishes with your decision.

Facts about owning a car....someone will always have one newer, older, faster, louder, shinier, lower miles, better ride, more horse power, more torque,....I could go on but you see the picture. If you're in it for one of those....hope your pockets are deep. With C5's starting to approach the 20 year mark, many of us own ours not because it's new or fast or loud but because we have a passion for it. Corvette is an icon no matter what generation it is. If you're not seeing a fit for the Corvette anymore, sounds like you've all ready made up you mind and looking for some justification. My justification is doing a mod or something to mine that makes it mine. We're all different, I like my Millennium Yellow Z06 for what it is, not my first corvette, but at this point it's a keeper. So in the end you have to do what you have to do.
