Missed it... They are FAR from junk. Had a '97 - no issues. Just didn't like the color. Anyone who thinks they are junk should maybe rethink their purchases and get... oh I dunno, a Vega or something.
There was that post about someone saying you couldn't give him a pre-01. Bunch of posts about avoiding the pre-01 cars like the plague, etc.
What I don't understand outside of the bigger challenge in finding parts what is actually different about the driving experience in the two groups of years. Outside of the wheels they effectively look the same, the interiors are effectively the same, the motors are largely the same, etc. Sure, the later cars had more handling choices and there were improvements behind the scenes, but still.
Maybe I'm crazy.

I'm starting to see a pricing pattern...spending time every day searching through the cars for sale, it's apparent sellers are well aware that the '01 and newer models are more sought after, and are pricing them higher...the '01 and newer models are coming with asking prices anywhere from $3K-$5K more than similar mileage pre '01s...for that much of a difference a guy could buy a nice pre '01 and just bank the savings for when one or more of the known bad parts does go out and still come out ahead price wise...I could see maybe paying a $1K-$2K premium for the newer models, but $3K-$5K seems a bit much to me...

Some will disagree, but Vette's are a High Maintenance car. EBCM, Harmonic Balancer, Sway Bar joints, gone out with just 40,000 plus mileage. General maintenance is pricey just trying to make it dependable. You really have to want the car for what it cost to own one.

The ECBM can be converted to the 01-04 style, don't let the people tell you anything different to scare you off. You can convert the whole car basically to an 01-04 car for less than the difference of buying one, just read the stickies and look at the fob and TPMS kits you can buy and read the EBCM conversion thread. Hell you can convert anything and everything on these cars, they're old, and nothing special.
