Do you think this heat would damage a double din head unit? I want to to upgrade mine so I have NAV, backup camera and some other goodies, but am worried that the excessive heat might fail the head unit.

Head units are pretty sturdy. Think of how hot a black car with a black interior gets sitting in the desert sun. I would not worry, stick to a quality brand and you should be fine.
