So when is it to late to start a build thread?!?!?!
So when is it to late to start a build thread??
I bought my 2000 C5 in April of this year. It is a silver with black stripe down the middle (painted on unfortunately) M6 Coupe with the electronic suspension (F45 maybe?) that now has a shade over 95,000 miles on it after driving it home and around a few times here and there.
When I bought it I knew it had a Borla axle back, a Blackwing Intake, a Carbon Dipped Air Bridge, an unknown set of LTs that appear to be painted or something, some aftermarket brand rotors, a Kenwood DD Flat Screen radio with Nav, and GM Z06 wheels that had been powder coated black. I later found out it had an MGW Short Shifter, and a catted 3" X-Pipe as well.
When I got it home I decided I wanted to add some new speakers, an amp, a small self powered sub, and some sound deadening to it. This is when I found out about the MGW short shifter. I added some sound deadening and the other items mentioned and I also sent off the interior controls and the dual HVAC controller to have it repaired and blue LED lights installed in all the switches.
Fast forward a month and it is getting a little hot so I took it to Lethal Performance and Dyno in Jefferson City, TN to have the guys check it out and let me know what all they found that it would need.
Brandon tells me about the power steering rack leaking (oh yeah I forgot the previous owner told me that as well), that it was leaking at the water pump and thermostat housing, and running very rich. He was also the one to inform me of the 3" X-Pipe
So I bring it home and throw it up on jack stands.........
What was going to be a water pump replacement has turned into a WHOLE DANG BUILD!!!

I agree, it’s never too late. I just started putting my thread together last year, and I started my build 5 years ago.
While it’s very time consuming, it’s kinda like reliving it as well, but I highly recommend doing it as you go.

So it as of now is almost ready to have to motor pulled.
I stopped at HF Saturday and I picked up an engine lift, engine stand, trans jack, and another shop stool
Today I got the X-Pipe out, LTs out, A/C Compressor off, condenser out, and the A/C bracket off.
New Pfadt Johnny O'Connel Stage 1 kit, TSP Headers and catless X-Pipe, and PRC 225 heads with 60cc chambers, SS valves, and .660 dual springs, Moroso coolant tank, Moroso PS tank, Moroso Brake MC cover, Mororso Fuse box cover, and some other misc items came today.
Other parts that have been here are the Dorman LS intake, LS2 TB, TSP 228R Cam, LS7 lifter and new buckets, new Melling HP oil pump, 42# injectors, BB Fusion Exhaust, 85MM MAF housing, OE rockers with trunnion upgrades, and LS6 valley cover, Power Bond 10% under drive balancer, water pump, all new tensioners with pulley, new LS2 PWS pulley, new head and dampner bolts, electronic suspension sims, and some other tid bits.
Good gracious I hope I can remember how all this goes back together!
Still to buy are a new clutch kit (prob the LUK LS6), LS6 power steering cooler, new hoses for the power steering, new A/C compressor with hoses, drier, condenser, aftermarket fuel rail kit, fuel pressure regulator, ball joints and tie rod ends, O2 sensors (might as well right), and some odds and end pieces of hose loom and insulation that is just crumbling away (prob go for braided black wire covers and such for better looks). I may go ahead and pull the oil pan and add the windage block offs from ImprovedRacing as well along with the crank scraper. I wish I could go ahead and replace the rotating assembly and have the block honed and such as well but I doubt I will be able to do that.
Future things will be a RPM trans rebuilt to the M12 gearing and a RPM rear diff rebuilt with either 3:?? or 4:10 gears.
Then a paint job and some carbon fiber body parts, wheels (if I can ever decide on any), and a Wilwood Brake upgrade.

Yeah FedEx just picked mine up today actually and it is on its way to Turn-One for their services. You figure with all the people still driving these and still buying these that some aftermarket group would have made a better replacement or something by now!

With all the effort it’s best to rebuild the torque tube (at the very least the front bearing). I helped a friend swap out a rebuilt transmission and I advised the TT while it was out. He declined and within 20 miles of having the car back together the front bearing started squealing. His car has 70k miles.

Yes I need to look into this as well. I think RPM sells the stuff to do the rebuild for the TT as well?

So the engine is pulled as you see above, I foolishly forgot to cover all the ports while it was in the car over the couple of weeks and hope I have not allowed it to rust somewhere! Bad rookie mistake!
but I have the block covered now to the best of my ability and cleaned it up and painted it. Next will be the oil pan and then start on getting the engine bay cleaned up from apparent years of neglect. Then change the wiring harnesses looming out.
Still have to order push rods and have a few more odds and ends coming then can get the motor opened and change the cam, lifters, oil pump, timing set, cut the block for the LS6 valley pan, then put on the new heads, intake, etc.
I am having a hard time deciding on a clutch kit. Im leaning toward the heavy duty LUK kit. But there is the Tick Performance LS7 clutch package but its $1000! Can get the LUK, a GM Performance slave, and a standard master cylinder kit way cheaper.
Oh and I hope I have the right coupler part numbers and still gotta find a bearing set for the TT. I wish money wasnt an issue cause I would go ahead with the RPM trans and diff as well. Oh well such is life lol.
BTW-color of block is VHT Burnt Copper with clear gloss over it. Will do the pan in black along with engine mounts. Heads....I have not decided yet. Maybe the same as the block.

Torque tube out today. Front cradle dropped to the ground (easily if course haha) and now I think I may have bought the wrong size stuff for my tube??? Ugh. Anyways really just waiting on parts now.
