Default how to fix a deep scratch ?

Guys,
I had a run in with . shovel in my garage, leaving a short but kind of deep scratch in the left rear quarter. Any advice on a product I can use as a body filler prior to touch up?

Thanks in advance,
Tim

Free bump!

Following, as I have almost the same damage on the opposite fender in almost the same location. I got mine free of charge in a best buy parking lot.

I've not used Dr Colorchip myself, but this is a good video of how it's used on a non metallic color. Hope this helps!

I had one similar and I carefully filled it with layers of touch up paint. Mine was lower on front fender and is totally un noticeable now. Yours is in a worse spot. Might want to take it to a pro and get his recommendation.

Looks like it is down the SMC. Shop manual recommends treating SMC just like fiberglass. I would start with some filler to get things level, then touch up paint. You will probably have to wet and dry "sand" the area to get everything even. Don't forget the clear coat to finish. The auto parts chains sell small tubes of body filler - no need for a big can of Bondo.

I had a similar problem with a welcome to the cruise nite canopy. Wind came and picked it up. Leg hit my fender. I tried to do what many have and there’s lots of videos for but metallic paint is another ballgame.
Here’s a progression of my (lack of) progress:

The OP's scratch looks like the type that would mean I need a new car. The scratch in the post right above, looks like a simple wet sand and buff would have made it 95% better and was made worse by the attempt to conceal.

Probably. I made every effort to sand with a FLAT surfaced paper. You can’t see it, but the surface is completely smooth. Too bad I sanded thru the clear coat.

I used Dr,Colorchip, it matches very well. Aside from repainting, this is the next best thing.

So after the touch up there's no buffing to smooth it all out??

If it’s a lost cause then you should give it a shot. This is good practice for when you aren’t going to have it done professionally.

I watched this a couple times, and it looked to me that I could still see the chips. But he did say if you're OCD you can do multiple applications. And since I am, I'd have to keep doing it til I couldn't see the chips at all!

Actually I already did. If you look at my pix, you’ll see the scratches which did not photograph well. The second pic shows them all filled with touchup, and then the final shows the result after sanding with small blocks I made that I glued 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit wet/dry to. I thought I was being extremely careful but obviously I wasn’t . The surface in the last pic is completely smooth and even the fingernail test passes. One ‘knife cut’ scratch on the top right that you can see in the second pic <is> gone, but the rest are what you see.

I watched that video and ordered that fineline paint pen, since I have other chips....
