Got a 97 c5 and am wondering if any one has the same problem. It you put something in the center console and leave it there while driving and then take it out it is hotter than hell. Took the console off and there is nothing under it for a heat shield. Did GM put something there and if so does any one know where to get it and if not has any one put any kind of heat shield there.
There are a number of products on the market to use as a heat shield. A couple of them are forum vendors. I've tried several, including some open cell radiant barrier off the shelf at Lowe's. While there is some relief, it still gets REALLY hot in the center console. Enough so that I can't keep my cell phone in there.
I had the same problem. I installed the total insulation kit from Vettenuts which put some material under the console. It helped but still fried my phone to where it would go on standby from overheating. Then bought this insulator which helped even more. It's not perfect, but did reduce the heat enough to where my phone no longer overheats.
Of course you can always get an insulated tunnel plate....heard good things about the one from Elite.
There's always the more expensive way to insulate the interior from the exhaust heat; the ceramic plate that goes above your exhaust as a replacement to the cheap metal plate that's oem.
