When you turn it inside out, it leaves an air gap around the shifter stick for noise to come through. When you trim it the regular way, the middle rib of the boot fits snuggly around the base of the Hurst, so its sealing the base, not the shifter stick.
I put the stock cover back on and just trimmed about 1/2" off of the rubber donut and that solved that part. Now I have to take it apart agin to get rid of the rattling. I am not sure if it is from the **** or the shaft. Gary

Gary,
You said : "I am not sure if it is from the **** or the shaft. "
I suspect you will find it is that darn little key that is not locking the **** down properly. If you hold the **** and twist it slightly does the noise go away? If so, I can practically guarantee it is the T shaped key
Be sure the **** is screwed down as far as it will go, then back it off just enough to put it in the correct position. You may have to file the key (do it carefully - it is very soft metal) to get a nice clean taper on it, then place it back in its slot and drive it home gently with a hammer (use a piece of wood in between so you don't mushroom the top of the key).
