[Z06] Z06 versus Mitsubishi Evolution...

Re: Z06 versus Mitsubishi Evolution... (rbartick)
The new M/T claims that the Evo is quicker than the STi.
It got lucky.
in every other mag the STI was quicker.
in reality the STI will be quicker.
HP/Pound is never wrong

They've improved the looks over the WRX. Here's the STi:
The STi has .5 more liters, 300HP, with 300 torque at 4000RPM, and a 6-speed (vs 5 for the Evo). Depending on HP+TQ area under the curve and gearing, the cars can be pretty close despite the rated HP+weight differences.

I tend to look at the MPH more than the ET from the different mags and in this case they are very close.....The ET is all about traction so it will vary from track surface to track surface....
Looking at the mph tells you that the cars were making about the same power...It would be nice if they all tested at the same track but then there would be no need for more than one mag and the results would be predictable........

The latest Car and Driver has them:
STi: 0-60 4.6, 1/4 mile 13.2 @ 103
Evo: 0-60 5.0, 1/4 mile 13.6 @ 101
Here's the funny part, the 5-60mph run (more realistic on the street):
Sti: 5.8
Evo: 6.7
That's a HUGE difference. Shows how important the all-wheel drive AND keeping the turbo spooled way up is.
I'll just remember not to race one at a stop light until after 5mph.

Just as a little bit of a clue into the performance potential of the STI
A local WRX that had its displacement increased to 2.5 liters, mated with a huge turbo, is putting out 420horsepower to the WHEELS. This is a car he autocrosses every weekend too, and it is surviving. Plus he RAISED the compression ratio to 9:1 (from 8:1) so this isn't some turbo lag beast. They built it to spool quick because that is critical in low speed autocrossing.
Anyway, the point is, a turbo swap and exauhst ($3000ish) along with dyno tuning and those Stis can be making *major* power.
larger engine turbo motors are fun =) Think "supra with traction"
hehe

I've had a subscription to Motor Trend for a couple of years, and I don't trust anything they print. But, they have great mini-van reviews. :U

i'm not so certain that they can bang off low 13s... but with a simple turbo upgrade, i'm sure they are capable of moving.
how much does the STi weigh?

The Mitsu is very impressive for a stock turbocharged four banger. Did anyone notice how close the Mitsu's numbers are to the new Cobra? Mitsu 0-60: 4.59 sec; Cobra 0-60: 4.82 sec. Mitsu quarter mile: 13.08@105.12; Cobra: 13.01@110.69. And really, the Mitsu's numbers are pretty close to the Z06's, too. It also has many forged internals so it can handle the 19 psi of boost and maybe more. A couple of mods and beware the ricer beside you at the red light. When testing the Mitsu, Justin Bell was the driver. I don't know who was testing the Subaru but it probably wasn't Justin Bell. That said, they weren't tested on the same day either. Motor Trend says they are setting up a head to head match against each other. All in all, VERY impressive. And a little scary at the same time.

there is some speculation that the magazine evos are ringers.
A well respected tuner got access to a magazine test car, and a stock one off a lot and dynoed them. the magazine car made a lot more power.
maybe due to break though. we shall see when people start hitting the dragstrips with their cars.

I was talking to a friend of mine that works at the local Subaru dealer installing factory performance parts. He told me that the quickest EVO to date besides the one tested in Motor Trend ran a 13.28 at Englishtown. (Englishtown is known to be one of the faster tracks around). That Motor Trend car sounds fishy to me. :skep:

Re: Z06 versus Mitsubishi Evolution... (Nat02Z06)
The EVO is a 4-door version of the Eclipse/Talon from 90-99, some of which are in the 8's with basically a stock-ish configuration (built stock block, ported stock head, stock transmission, etc). In no way am I saying those cars are stock, they have big turbos and nitrous - but don't discount the EVO just because it's a 4-banger. Sure, it sounds goofy, sure you have to rev it, and sure it has turbo lag, but saying those things won't take the embarrassment off your face if you lose to one :) They are fast cars, show them the respect they deserve, imho.

Re: Z06 versus Mitsubishi Evolution... (Dylan Savage)
you actually dont have to rev up these turbo 2.0s to make power.
not that much anyway, around 4krpms the regular WRX is extremely torquey. especially once you slap a turbo-back exauhst on there.
its not like a hondaS2000 that just slowly build power to 9krpms
a WRX feels like dog poop at 2krpms, but by 4k its slapping you back in the seat nicely.

Re: Z06 versus Mitsubishi Evolution... (jackmott)
Clearly the way to race these is to take them from a roll.
As for upgrading them, 19psi of boost bone stock? I don't think I'd want to turn that up much more or it may be time for a new motor.

19psi is just for the lancer.
The STI is between 14-16 I believe.

Re: Z06 versus Mitsubishi Evolution... (Noran Raad)
Guys, one thing I noticed in the recent issue of Car and Driver with the Sti vs. Evo on the cover...well, the telling story of the Evo is that it's 5mph-60mph acceleration, meaning no clutch dumps, is 6.7 seconds!!! Ouch, I'm not too impressed at all. Meaning, that to get the good 0 to 60 times, you really need to do a brutal 5000rpm clutch drop. That may be fun for a couple dozen times, but then it's time to replace the clutch. :( The Sti had a much better 5-60mph time of 5.8 seconds I believe. Also the 0 to 130mph favors the Sti by 4 seconds which is pretty dramatic.
Both cars are awesome and the Evo did win the comparison due to it's stellar handling, but the powerband of the Evo doesn't impress me as much as I had originally thought.
