I read in a few magazines that it is like 173. I don't understand this. I read in another magazine a LS1 vette topped out at 172. The Z has about 60 more RWHP so I would think it should be able to get to about 180 or so. I know a ZR1 can go over 180, so why can a Z06 hit at least 180? Is it the aerodynamics or the gearing? I also read that a LT1 Vette can go 172 and those have about 275 RWHP. Anyone have a clue???
28mpg highway is why. 6th gear became a pure economy gear not a performance gear of any kind. The theoretical limit of 6th gear is something like 260mph. That means when you shift from redline in 5th (172mph) to 6th the rpm's drop so far bellow the power band that the engine can't pull the car back into its power range and as a result the car does not continue to accelerate. Had 5th gear gone to 155-160 and 6th gear gone to 200-205 the z06 would have come damn close to hitting 200mph.

I bet 185 mph is more reallistic with the stock 360 RWHP. The Z06 is not quite as aerodynamic as the coupe either. But no doubt some of the meaner H/C cars could hit 200 with gearing like that.
The stock gearing of the Z06 is tough to fault overall. There is a BIG difference in the way the Z06 hits 172 mph or whatever quickly compared to a '03 Cobra slowly clawing its way up to 170 mph at best in its tall 5th gear. The Stang would have better high speed performance with a lower 5th but a little less bragging rights for the car magazines.
I was reading some magazine (forget which) about someone's turboed Z06 that had the hp to get way past 172 but he was blowing out the transmission. I think I remember it saying he peged the speedometer. The article said that 6th gear could do the speed with enough hp behind it but it or the transmission case couldn't take the stress of pushing the car into the wind at some point.

I'd be interested in which magazine. The only one that I saw actually test top speed was Road & Track. They found that top speed was reached in 5th, and the upshift to 6th dropped it so far out of the power band that the car slowed down (as was noted above). The transmission is plenty strong, but the gearing is not appropriate for the absolute best top speed.
Still, with the aerodynamics being what they are, not much more can be gained.

he does 2 vipers in a row! he da man!
Excellent article, I have the original R&T top speed mag test, that was a classic on state of the art tuner technology, although I was disappointed they tested such a mild 420 crank HP Supra considering what was available even back then. Oh well.
It's worth noting that it has been proven that banked ovals kill 2-3 mph top speed also, so those speeds could all be increased slightly with a flat stretch of highway. :auto:
