I speak from experience (unfortunatley). About three years ago I got caught in a flash flood here in Tampa. I was just about to high ground when someone in a "huge" truck swamped my 97 C-5. One loud bang! and that was all she wrote. Luckily I wasn't but three blocks from my local C-5 specialist. So I had the car flatbedded there and the repairs began. He told me it's pretty common unfortunatley to have a hydrolock issue, call my insurance and it will be covered under comprehensive. I did that the next day and everyone I dealt with at State Farm was super nice. They sent a claims adjuster over to the shop the next day. The mechanic showed him the car and explained it needed a whole new block. State Farm agreed and said no problem. I was just at 52k miles when this happened. State Farm explained to me that if I would have been under 50k, they would have sprung for a brand new block from GM. So the shop that works on my car specializes in rebuilding C-5s. He had a 2001 block with only 19k on it. Insurance paid for that and within a few weeks I was back on the road. It only cost me my $500 deductible, although the bill was over 8k. To my suprise the car ran even better then before and continued to run great until I sold it a few months ago with 85k miles on it. On another note, the after market intake has absolutley nothing to do with your insurance covering it. It happens all the time with stock intakes. With any luck you'll get a new block and be back on the road in a few weeks. Good luck and stay out of the rain. My new Z doesn't go anywhere in Tampa when there is a threat of rain. Lesson learned!

I'm no expert, but if you have mud and water up into your radiator area I don't care what kind of air filter system you had, the same thing whould have happened.
If the Ins company says anything, point out the mud and radiator, and ask if you should have had a snorkel installed to protect you from this.
This was no fault of your own and should and most likey will be covered no problem.
Good luck

That's why I haven't gone to a Vararam. It by far is the best design that I have seen but I fear the possibility of water intake and hydrolocking the engine. A straight rain storm probably would be okay but if a truck or SUV went by and hit a deep puddle and sent a heavy stream your way you might be in deep do do? Wish I had more guts but I don't.

**UPDATE**
Thanks again all for your comments.
Looks as though I am getting a whole new engine out of the deal. Found a great deal on a Z06 engine and seems as though my car will be better than ever! It also gives me an excuse to upgrade a lot of other things (out of pocket) while it is being done.
I will keep you posted.

Of course if you have a cut-out in your shroud, you may be in for a fight.

Hey All,
Got caught in a flash flood here in El Paso (if you can believe that) and sucked water through my Blackwing and into the engine. DOH! No electrical problems at all, just engine, intake, and radiator gunked with mud and grass. The car is currently at the dealership (yikes) and they are in contact with my insurance company.
I was hoping that someone who has had done the same as me could let me know what to expect. Am I looking at a complete rebuild, or will I need a new engine? I'm also wondering if they will just consider it a total loss and pay current car value.
I'm pretty bummed right now and am stuck driving my '92 Ford Ranger. I'd appreciate any info. and encouragement.
Thanks,
Matt

Regarding the 'wing'. unless engine modifications are specifically excluded in your auto comprehensive coverage, there is coverage. Unless you have a peculiar auto policy I not familiar with, or you have signed a policy waiver, you have coverage.

Some insurance companies would still be working on the case.

I feel your pain, all too well. I had the same thing happen to my 00 WS6 right at a year ago......and how I ended up in a C5. The water was only up to bottom of ground effect, how it sucked it up into the engine is still a mystery. I was at a red light and pretty sure a big truck hauled *** past and kicked up a big wake and got sucked up. Got it towed home and called insurance. I pulled plugs while waiting on them to come by, turned the engine over by hand and rear 2 cylinders dumped out water along with pieces of cast iron. They totaled it which was depressing, BUT they gave me almost 4k more than what I paid 18 months before that.....so took the extra and got a C5 that was 4yrs newer and 26k less miles and still a paid off vehicle. Been enjoying it as the daily ever since.
