What causes the rust? gravel driveway or parking outside??
not C5 related.. yet...
but i have a gravel driveway and just put up a garage this year.. my 5 year old ford is rusting away...
i assumed its because it was parked outside.. or is it because of the gravel driveway?
I am getting a corvette in the spring.. and will park it in the garage.. but i will still have a gravel driveway.. so will i cause any metal to rust away because of the gravel driveway? or will parking it in a garage be ok.. even though its on a gravel drive??
my question.. what cuases the vehicle to rust? parking it outside or driving up the gravel driveway??

I think it's the FORD
neither one, really, if the car is painted and protected properly.
If I had to pick one out of the two, i'd say parking outside is the cause.
Your vette body panels won't rust though, b/c they're not metal. Just about the only part you have to worry about is frame rails.

Humidity is the culprit, and anything you do to aggrevate that will promote quicker corrosion.
Excessive vehicle washing (notice your rotors after your next wash...), gravel/dirt/grass, concrete, fog, sea spray, rain/snow...
All these and more promote corrosion, so try to keep it inside, dry, and covered.

If they salt the roads in the winter in Maine then that could be the #1 reason for the rust, and if you live close to the coast the salt air won't help either. Keep em clean and waxed and that shall help.

its an 99 F150 painted bumper.. the door panels rusted after 3 years but that was a warranty thing and fixed by ford.. but the back bumper - painted bumper is wicked rusty... all around the license plate lights is complete rust along with other spots on the sides of the bumper...
not sure if its attributed to parking outside or just a crappy bumper... the rest of the truck seems ok...but ive had my emergency brake calipers (or some part of the emergency brakes) rust shut... and they definetly salt up here.. i am inland so its not from the ocean..
thanks

Rust is simply the oxidation of iron. Create a site on the iron (Fe) to come in contact with water (H20) and Air (part o2) and allacazam....you get iron oxide, rust, FeO(OH). As long as your iron is protected from water and oxygen you wont have rust. Simple right!
For tomorrows topic we can talk about when iron oxide (rust) forms why does it create rust bubbles and inversly when aluminum oxide forms why does it create pitting? interesting....
I live in Central NY I have way too much experience with Rust and a little formal training with the sciences.

Rust is caused by water, plain and simple. Things can help the corrosion along, but water is the culprit. Illiminate the water and you illiminate the rust.
Living in Canada with harsh winters, some people spray their cars at your local rust spray shop. My last winter beater was a 1993 Ford Explorer. Sprayed it every year and never had any rust.
