Just bought a CLB from Thunder Racing. Great bunch of guys. Question is: Should I go ahead and install it before the recall; should I wait until after the recall; or should I install it and forget the recall.
Did you buy your car brand new or used. If used what year is it 97-99 it might already have it done. Check with the dealer over the phone they should be able to help you. NOw here is the kicker even if they have done it, it still could give you a message and lock up on you like mine did yesterday. It si still at the dealer because they can't figure out what to do. Anyway before I **** myself off again try and check those things first and then install away.
My opinion is that you should just do the by-pass and be done with it. When my c5's column locked up, I stopped by the GM dealer who was close to where it happened, and they never even heard of column lock. Plus, my car has a Major Guard warranty, and they never even asked me about it! But, they did let me use their computer online so that I could come to this forum, and get advice about how to get it unlocked before I would have to have it towed. I put the by-pass in, (very simple), and no problems since. The decisions yours, but, I wouldn't let GM change my oil!
I got the recall notice in the mail a few months ago. I've brought my car to the dealer since then. They made no mention of the recall, nor did they try to perform it without telling me. Install the bypass and forget about it. Don't tempt fate by delaying, because you know it will lock the day before you plan on installing it.
I had the original recall done in 2002 on my 99. It involved the addition of a relay and a new wiring harness. The current recall involves reprogamming to shut off the fuel if the column is locked and you are moving, also checking the lockplate for proper clearances. I will not have the second recall done, I purchased a clb bypass and will intstall it if problems arise. By the way, mine is an Mn6.....
Nitro, the only issue may be warranty work. If your car is still under warranty, the dealer may insist on doing the recall if you bring it in for any work. Mine did when I brought my '02 in for a leaking rear differential. I had the CLB already installed and didn't want the recall done (at least not touching my dash).
If you are out of warranty, install the CLB and be forget about the recall. If you are still under warranty, have the recall done (ASAP), and then install the CLB. Don't install the CLB before the recall because I have read at least one post where the dealer tried to charge someone for removing the CLB when performing the recall (not sure if it was on an A4 or MN6).

It may be too late to install it when problems arise. I would put it in now and not worry about it.
I had the recall done and the weekend I got it back I put the CLB in knowing that GM had no real fix for the MN6.
I have a MN6 2004 and would not risk the dealership ripping into my dashboard for what isn't even a fix. I ordered from Thunder Racing and installed this past Sunday. It was a peice of cake and best of all I now have peice of mind. Forget the recall and go for it.
I would do both, go get the recall, and then put the CLB on. Yea GM has no real fix, but if other things go wrong with your car (electrical or computer) then your covered.(you can always remove the CLB too) If you ever decide to sell the car, then it's good to show you had the recalls done. This is one of the things I check before buying a car,,what recalls where on that make/model and if they were done to the car I am buying.
Install the CLB. Then fill out the paper work that came with the recall and send it to GM. GM sent me a letter of denial for my CLB on a Saturday, and I got a check in the mail that Monday for the full amount.

I bought the CLB from them also, and went ahead and installed it. Then I got my recall notice for the column lock and uninstalled it so they could do the recall. Now I will have to put it back on. I wanted the recall done simply to say that I had complied with it. Some just ignore it though.
Stopped by Ross Downing today and had the recall done. It took Randy about 15 minutes, including the paperwork. Randy is a great Corvette mechanic.
This weekend I will put in the CLB that I bought from Thunder Racing.
BTW - I ordered the CLB from Thunder Racing on the net without realizing they were here in Baton Rouge. David called me on the phone and asked me if I really wanted it shipped, as I could pick it up and save shipping costs. Great bunch of guys.
