how in the world does this make sense to G.M.?
i've been doing some research about possibly changing the diff in my '01 MN6. i found out that because it's a stick, i don't have to worry about reprogramming the computer since the stick uses the ABS wheel sensors to decipher vehicle speed. now the auto uses a VSS or some such thing to determine vehicle speed. so why don't both cars just use the same method? it just doesn't seem to make sense that the two transmissions should require so much additional difference. it just seems kind of retarded to me. maybe the MN6 method is just SO much more expensive. who knows?

Where did you hear that? Both the manual and auto versions use the VSS on the top of the diff to read vehicle speed. Below is a pic of a diff with the black VSS connector on the top.
The difference in auto and manual when changing diffs is that the auto requires reprogramming of the shift points which isn't required in the manual since the driver determines those and not the PCM.
