I just noticed yesterday after filling up that my "range" was not correct. It usually goes to 278 or so but this time it was at like 54 and then it would start dropping slowly, even when I was sitting still in my garage. My gas gauge is still working correctly thank goodness. Anyone ever have the same problem? I hate to do it but I guess I have to go to the dealer as I am still under warranty.
Go to your MPG reading and try resetting, and then go for a short drive to give the computer time to "do some math" and then check the range when your Avg MPG levels off.

Hey srcheif100...

The current avatar is the result of breeding.... Zilla and one of the Fem's in his avatar.. just never know what your gonna get
The range is controlled by the amount of fuel in the tank, the speed you are going, (and the distance you are covering) and the amount of fuel your engine is consuming at any given moment. If you're sitting still, in the garage with the engine running, you're using fuel and going nowhere. Your MPG is "0". It won't take long for your average to drop considerably. Hence...the range drops also. I've made the mistake of resetting my average MPG on trips while still accelerating on a freeway entrance ramp....range is very low. One time I got a "low fuel" warning with a full tank just by resetting at the gas station then accelerating very hard onto the freeway. Reset your average after you get to cruising speed.
true, but you are referring to "INST MPG" I think he is referring to the option just "Range" that is supposedly what's left in your tank total.
No, if you are not moving and the car is running the range will go down, and sit there long enough and you'll run out of gas, not going anywhere the range will say 0 because you are now out of gas.

Well thats strange because in almost 3 years of ownership it has never done that. Every time I fill up I reset my trip, average speed and mpg and my range always resets itself at around 278. It does not drop as I sit there.
I just got back from a drive and it is still whacked, erractic readings. I will drive it for a while and refill the tank and see what happens.
I was driving yesterday to all of the sudden find a check gauge light on. I looked at the DIC and it said "Low Fuel." I thought this was werid for two reasons, it normally says reserve fuel and I filled up the day prior. Then I look at my fuel gauge and it is at 0! I pull over at first thinking I had a massive fuel leak. Then I remembered these cars have a mind of their own, so I turned it off and back and on and presto, everything has been fine since. I am just worried this type of stuff will happen more frequently as the cars get older. Has that happened to any of you guys?
You are experiencing a very common problem, the fuel sending unit is failing. You can try a different brand of gas or add some techron additive to see if that makes a difference.

I would suggest checking your DIC for codes (press and hold the option button and press fuel button 4 times with key on but engine not running), if fuel codes are set, try replacing the fuel sending unit, I did and all is well for now.
I have the same problem, no codes are set either, some CF members tried Chevron fuel injector cleaner or better yet "Red Line" injector cleaner and it cured the erratic DIC reading, I'm trying chevron first then Red Line, hopping it will work. I'll keep you posted.
