I love hearing the stories of other people making their budget work! Many ways in life to enjoy!
I couldn't agree more. Too many people come along with attitude of if you cannot spend 10 grand on a Vette paint job, you cannot afford the car. That's a load of bull. I spent my youth piecing together some really cool rides and enjoyed myself along the way. I could not afford stuff back then, but still enjoy the Enginuity now.
It's looking surprisingly good and it will be interesting to see it after you sand and polish the finished car.
Years ago I remember reading a very long thread where a guy roller painted an orange Charger. The only problem is the body and prep work are very tedious but important for the outcome. Not sure I'd have the patience to do what you are, I'd be tempted to do a prep sand, tape off and run it to Maaco for a fast spray. Good luck!

Yeah I too read that and was in awe how shiny he got it! I followed the gentleman, RickWrench who rolled his Corvair!
Paint is majority prep work, and after care! I am by no means expecting a 10k finish, but it’s been so exciting watching the car transform!
Need to paint the front lip, install side splitters, and then rewrap the Halo and touch up some spots!
Out of curiosity. . .if you're willing to put in the time/labor, why did you want to start with a method which is likely to yield inferior results? A great paint job is mostly prep. If you are willing to do the prep, a paint job shouldn't cost you a fortune. If you hand over a car that's properly prepped, you can probably find someone to do the labor to professionally spray the car for $500 or less (it takes only a few hours at that point). Materials are obviously more expensive (around $500-1000 I'd guess, it's been 10 years since I had one done and I think I spent $600 on materials).
You could even purchase a gun and do this in a garage and get good results (I've done that as well) that can be vastly improved since you're willing to cut/buff with lots of additional labor. Obviously you're committed here...but you don't have to spend a fortune to get a great paint job.
Appreciate the question and a valid point! So paint jobs near me, two quotes 10k plus for a stock color respray, not in budget!
I could have plasti dipped it again like I did 10 years ago, but tons of overspray and have to use chemicals to clean the gun!
As you see I do not have the garage to properly do that in!
Roller method intrigued me for many years because it takes so long, but with three younger kids, it allowed me to work on it an hour a morning, and not have harsh overspray or chemicals in the air!
Yeah 100% correct, could have done the route of prep and have MAACO spray it, but then I’m super picky in who works on my car as I don’t want them to lift it wrong etc!
Plus at the end of it all, I show my kids through hard work, and sometimes a crazy unacceptable idea, can yield a great result if you stay your course!
Using this method I have painted boats and appliances with great results. Haven't done a car yet but I would try this before spending $8,000 on a paint job for a $15,000 car. Nice job!
since when did cost effectiveness become a factor :-)
I blew 5x that on my paint job, multiples on that on the interior, and multiples again on the motor. If not spending a significant amount on the car than it was worth was really a factor, we'd all be driving cars with worn paint, original wheels and ratty interiors... and basically stock motors.
to the OP -- I don't really know anything about the roller method, if it looks good more power to you. But I do know about painting in general-- I don't see how the finished product is going to look acceptable without doing the paint in a paint booth -- prep and environment are kings when painting, no matter how you apply it. Zero chance you're not going to be dealing with dust/bugs/etc by painting it outside in the elements.
