Does the ground need to go to the battery to work correctly? Thanks

Battery or sensor ground. Most widebands I usually go to an ECU ground/source of the voltage supplied ground. Thus if you are pulling power off a 12v circuit, grab that ground. If you are pulling from the battery, go there.

No, I am running the PLX on another vehicle and have it hooked to a good chassis ground and works fine.

Ok cool..is there any issues with just putting in the o2 in, or does it need to be left out with the key on? I just screwed it in...thanks

The Plx does not require a calibration like some of the others. Just screw it in and fire it up.
