There are sensors at each wheel, sometimes called WSS or "wheel speed sensor." There is also a sensor in the differential, sometimes called the VSS or "vehicle speed sensor." So there are in fact five speed sensors altogether and all can (and do sometimes!) indicate different speeds. Different enough and traction control and/or active handling gets invoked. That's why it's important for the onboard computers to run diagnostic tests to determine if they are functioning properly. If they decide the signals are bogus, they choose the safe route and disable invocation of AHS/TCS.

My guess is you're having issues with the wheel speed sensors (two acting up at once and I'd be looking at connections and control modules, probably not the sensors themselves) and the dealer is thinking about the one in the diff.

What codes are you getting? I don't think you're ready to buy parts just yet.
