Unreal, the column lock message just showed up yesterday! I started the car, and the DIC read pull key wait 10 seconds... I did so and everything was fine. Should I be worried? I guess Im going to go to dealer to see if any recall was done.

Default Colum lock

HELP! Just bought a 2002 ZO6 Saturday and "SERVICE COLUMN LOCK" happened on Monday. The steering is locked so I contacted the dealer only to be told that the car I have had the recall completed in 2004. I contacted Chevrolet customer service "800 CHEVUSA" and was told the recall updates expired Feb of 2008 and there was nothing they could do. I am mechanicaly able to do most things, what would you suggest I do at this point? I would gladly get the block plate and install it if able after it is locked. The car is sitting at the Goodyear store with a fresh front end alignment.
Thx

*sigh*

My column locks nearly every single time I start it now. I have to bang it (and I do mean BANG) left and right to break it...which usually works after the third try or so. VERY embarrassing out in public or at gas stations. My '00 6spd had the recall done (I had the harness by the PCM) but the locking plate wasn't removed.

Ordering my CLB TONIGHT.

I am trying to help a friend out. It has the dealer installed bypass and I took my meter and verified a ground is going all the way back to the BCM on the light green wire on the 32 pin plug, however, I get the "service column lock" and "pull key and wait" messages. The disable is set to 256mph, so other than the annoying message, all is well. I also connected Pins 30 and 87 (org to white wires) and still no joy. I have plenty of tools and know how to use them, so please let me know if you have any ideas on how to kill this entirely. I will keep reading in the mean time.

Were you able to verify that the ground was switching from OPEN to GROUND (and back) at the appropriate times as the BCM sends the Lock and Unlock voltage? I'm just wondering if the factory installed bypass relay is stuck with the contacts in the CLOSED (GROUNDED) position and isn't switching. The BCM expects to see the change of state on the switch and simply being grounded (all the time) isn't sufficient. Maybe this was implied in your statement but I wasn't clear.

I had the recall done in November of 2008, I assume they removed the lock plate as the wheel never locks. Now I'm getting "pull key and wait 10 seconds" and "service column lock" messages. would this still be covered (being less than a year) by the dealer or am I on my own.

Nope. It's stuck at ground. I have the schematic in the service manual, but don't understand the timing of everything or how to replicate it. I have tons of experience with relays if I know exactly what it's looking for and when. It mostly reads "pull key" so I am thinking we need to replace the key and go from there.

Since your column doesn't lock the symptoms you will currently see is the messages and/or the fuel shutoff at 2mph. The CLB gets around that problem easily.

Is your car an auto or manual?????

If you need info on installing the CLB, PM me. I'm on the road this week but I check the PM's evenings when I get to a hotel.......
Car is a manual. I'm really confused by a few things. I thought the "k" harness was only done if the recall was done early on, and I was told that my car had NO recall done until 11/08. I pulled the panel and it does have the "K" harness. Tag on it has a date of 6.11.04.

I will do the CLB, or get a tune whichever would the best way to go

Same thing here. Just had recall done less than a year ago and now the same problem as you. What did you do?

I have a 2003 MN6spd
Ok, so I have read through much of this forum and have been more and more confused. I called GM and gave them my vin. at which point they told me that 04006 recall was done but they did not tell me the year that it was done and wouldn't tell me any other repairs done to the car. The steering column does lock when key is removed from ignition. I have had no problems with it, even when battery died and i recharged battery.
Anyhow, I am getting engine back exhaust and an EFI Live Tune in a few weeks. Is there anything that I should do in the meantime or let the shop know about it in advance.

Also, could anyone on here let me know history on my car...

Just had the "Pull Key / Wait 10 seconds" message this morning for the first time.

Interesting records for my car '01 Convertible Manual Trans

09/22/2006 V1153 - 04006 - INSTALL HARNESS KIT - 89023816 - HARNESS K
Comments: RECALL 04006 1 PERFORMED RECALL 04006 INSTALLED RELAY AND LOCK PLATE

but then...

02/16/2007 N6626 - THEFT DETERRENT WIRING AND/OR CONNECTOR REPAIR OR REPLACEM
Comment: O STS DIES WHEN CLUTCH IS DISENGAGED. RECALL 04006 WENT WRONG. OLH REQTECH CASE 945727. ALL DOC ON RO. INTERNAL BULL AIC3088F. REPROGRAMMED PCM AND THEFT DETERANT. NO FIX. CAR RAN ON HOIST SPUN REAR WHEEL AND CAR DIED. REMOVED CAMPAIGN HARNESS ALL OK

So it looks like the undid the recall, nothing happened at that point in time and called it good.
Now 2 1/2 years later I get the pull key message.

Wow, that was quick,
thanks for the info.

so I guess they just did the reflash on the computer which from what I hear doesn't fix it. I guess the next thing is...should i install a CLB? and more specifically do I need to before I get the thing tuned or does it make any difference?

Default CLB do it yourself very easy

Jus a quick note saying how easy it is to do the CLB yourself. I got the "pull key, wait 10 sec" blah blah blah message and car stalled at 2mph. After readin a few messages here I thought I would rather try this myself than have my car towed to a stealership to get raped by them telling me I needed a new ignition (which they will tell you). So I followed the link found on the front page of the sticky, ordered thru Thunder Racing and they had my CLB to me in 3 days (regular fedex). If you can hold a screw driver and pull a fuse you can do this yourself. They provide very easy to follow instructions and even provide the torx wrench you need to loosen 4 screws. I started this fix at 11:45am this morning and the car is up and running with no error messages. So for $60 bucks and 20 minutes I SAVED about $500. Thanks Corvette Forum, Thunder Racing, and all the members for your posts!!!

Ok so I also had the recall done at the dealership, and now a year and a half later I got the service column lock/pull key/10 seconds code. I ordered a CLB and installed it, and I seem to still be having the same problems. Did I do something wrong?

I have a 99 6 speed coupe that was just purchased out of the US. The day after arrival the 'pull key wait 10 seconds' message appears. After trying this command and it re-appearing I hit the reset button on the display control. Then the 'service column lock' message appears and the car will not move above 2 MPH.
I am pretty sure the recall is done as 1) the car had been checked for outstanding recalls from GM as part of the process for importing a car to Canada and 2) with the key removed the steering wheel can be freely turned.

I have tried resetting the BCM by removing the fuse but the message returns each time the key is inserted.

Do I simply need to install a CLB?

Thanks in advance.
