Default Need help with tire pressure censor mounting

I purchased a tire pressure censor for my '99. I know it is smaller in size the old one. I took it to the tire shop to have them mount it; they are telling me that it will not fit on my Kinesis K58s.

Can I have it mounted to the inside of the rim, epoxied with a band around the wheel to keep it in place. I have heard of this method employed by others. Any problems with this.

In answer to your second question, YES, they can be mounted inside the tire with epoxy or bands. A question on your first statement: your '99 takes the OLD sensors that are larger than the NEW sensors. The design changed between '00 and '01. If the one you just purchased is smaller than the rest, you probably bought the wrong one. Be sure to check BEFORE you put the new one in. Old-style and new-style ARE NOT compatible!

I was able to program the new censor (not mounted); it beeped the horn (don't know if it can actually read/transmit pressure). Would the new version (non 99) be able to do that.

No, if you were able to train the sensor to the car, you have the right version. New model won't train to old car.

You can see my posts in this thread for some pics and advice on epoxying/banding the sensors to the wheel.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=928471

It works fine, mine have been like this for close to 2 years and 25k miles with zero issues.

Here are some pics of the 2 different style sensors used on C5's...note both are shown the valvestems cut off and banded in place.

Old (1997-2000) style sensor:

New (2001-2004) style sensor:

The two styles are NOT interchangable...you must keep the same style that came on your car.

Thanks for all the great info.

A couple more things.

The censor I have looks like the 00-04 but is apparently programmed for 99 and previous. Ken Fitchner said there had been several part # changes.

Where can I get the band and epoxy to mount as in the pics in this thread. The tire shop I used does not have anything like it (and seem unwilling to provided parts). They are will to mount if I provide the parts.

Also, why is the valve stem cut down.

Is it more difficult to train the censor mounted in the rim becuase you may not know where to place the magnet; do you train before mounting.

That info is in the linked thread I posted above.

Mainly for clearance reasons. The stems come off the sensor body at an angle. You can keep them intact if you mount the sensor right in the middle of the wheel, and point the stems down into the bead relief of the wheel (the depressed area of the wheel barrel). Definitely check with your tire installer before mounting them, he has to work around them when mounting the tires...he may have a definite preference here.

I did train mine before the tires went on.
You can train them after the tires are on too. The non-magnetic aluminum does not block the training magnetic force. When you mount them, be sure to mount them in an area where you can remember where they are in the event you need to retrain them in the future (with the tires on). I mounted mine adjacent to the wheel's valvestem. Other choose to mount them 180 degrees from the stem, to balance the weight out. Either way is fine, just do it so you can remember.

Silly me, I should have checked the link before I posted a reply. That answers all my questions.

Thank You
