I just changed the oil for the first time on my new-to-me 2001 coupe. I was surprised to find a PF-46 oil filter installed. I thought the LS1 took a PF-44? Is the PF-46 the same or a little longer? I noticed that the tune up kit sold by the Forum lists a 44 but the picture shows a 46.
What gives?
The PF46 filter media is better and the reason it replaced the PF44.
Funny thing is the C4's LT1 used the PF52. It's a longer filter than the PF44, PF46 or UPF44. The openings on these filter are tad bigger than the PF52 but it has less filter media area. Does this mean the PF52 was overkill?
I bought a case of UPF-46's from GM parts direct. I have been told that the 46's are superior to the 44's in the filter medium dept but have not seen a definitive, objective test. Since the General went to the 46's, I did too.

Actually the UPF46 does not exist. Did you mean UPF44? The PF46 replaced the PF44 and is superior in filter media. The UPF44 still exists and filters a lower micron level than the PF44 or PF46.
I thought the biggest change was the filtering media? I'm looking at a PF46 filter right now and don't see an anti-drainback valve in it. So I don't think they have them. It wouldn't be needed anyway, the filter is mounted vertically.
