I posted a thread earlier saying that my car is making a knocking noise when I turn..... well it actually makes the klunking noise whether Im turning or not. It has progressively gotten a lot worse since I first posted. I dont know what is wrong with it. I cant pinpoint where the klunking is coming from... I had some one riding in the passenger seat and they felt it coming from under the car on their side as well. I cant hear the noise so much from outside the car because the SLP loudmouth kind of covers ALL noise up, but I do think it is coming from under the car.
If anyone has any comments I would greatly appreciate it. I just ordered and x-pipe so I will be able to have a look underneath it then. If anyone knows of anything I should try and look for when I get underneath it or if any one knows what the problem is or anyone that has had something similar happen to their car please respond. My car is a 1999 frc if that matters at all.
I had a grinding/clunking noise in my car a couple days ago...it ended up being that my front tire was hitting the brake cooling duct that protrudes into the front wheel wells. I don't know if this is your problem or not...but it is something to check. keep us informed!
maybe it's a wheel bearing. I've read that the wheel bearings will fail in some of these c5's. I haven't heard/felt/seen, any problems with mine "yet", but, I've started to keep my eye/ear on them.
Jack the car up on all four corners and check each wheel and wheel bearing. Then, put the car in drive or 4th and let the rear wheels run for a few seconds and see if you haer anything.
Not common at all but a rhythmic clunking noise can often be attributable to a bad CV axle..... But yeah, check those swaybar links and wheel bearings first. Good luck.
Are yall talking about the bushing/bolts that I used to lower the car in the front?
BTW- I notice the problem mostly when I turn the wheel to the left (just a small amount to the left..... like switching into left lane or goin around a slight curve to the left) It will make the noise a couple times then it will go away until I straiten the car back out then turn the wheel to the left a little and I will hear it again.
sorry for rambling on but the klunk sounds pretty bad and I just want to help describe exactly what I'm observing.
Sway bar links are similiar to what you describe for lowering the car. They are bushings and bolts that connect to both ends of your sway bar, which if you don't know is a solid bar connecting both sides of your suspension to dampen body roll.
Look for a (approx 1" black metal bar) along the rear of your suspension arms and rear end cradle. The ends of the bars will be attached to the rear lower control arms. The link that connects the bar to the control are is the end linke that we are talping about. You most lokley have plastic ones which can get severly distorted. If you want to up-grade, purchase and install metal end links. They are Z06 standard equipment.
Quick and easy--check the lug nuts. My son's mazda had one wheel with no torque and they loosened up. Especially noticeable when turning one direction over the other as one way forces the weight against the wheel and the other pulls it away.
