Default Drag radials: rear only, or rear and front?

Is it OK to just run drag radials on the back wheels or do you need to run them on the front as well?

I have heard people talk about handling concerns with sticky tires only being on the back and how that can be dangerous, but I'm not sure if that just applies to other tires, or drag radials as well.

FWIW, thinking about running the Nitto 555R.

You just need to run on the back. They are radials, same as your front so you will have no handling problems. Problems arise when you run a bias ply slick in the back and radial on the front.

Only on the back. Might want to try some regular 555's for the front.

I'd be very leery about running two very different compound tires front and rear. But I like taking turns hard though.

If running on a strip is the only place you run your car hard, then you should be ok. But if you like to take the turns hard on the street or on a track, that's a recipe for disaster.

Bob,

I thought the tread pattern needed to match? In otherwords, if I have the 555R2s in back, then I need the 555R2s up front, too [in the proper front/rear size, of course]. BTW, the Nitto 555R & R2s have the same tread pattern. I've been considering the R2s, which has stiffer sidewalls for road racing along with the specially formulated soft racing tread compound for straight line traction. http://www.nittotire.com/tires_555r2.asp

I don't know what you're doing. If drag racing and running road events and gymkhanas I would want two or three different sets.

I addressed the drag racing and DR's for the back only. For road events and gymkhanas I would want all four to match and not overly wide.

Don't know anything about Nittos. You should check the other forums. Go to General forums, General Corvette. You will find wheels and tires and also Autocrossing and Road Racing.

Nitto 555R2 & Nitto 555

I may have to do that because the Nitto555R2 in 17's, 275/40 ZR17 size tires, are approved for rim sizes 9.0-(9.5)-11.0 in the front, yet my front rims are the 17x8.5 C5 stock size. However, the Nitto 555 come in both the 255/45 ZR17 [8.0-(8.5)-9.5] & 255/40 ZR17 [8.5-(9.0)-10.0].

I have the C5 size wheels w/Kumho MX Ecsta tires. I've been leaning towards the R2s, and the 285/35 ZR18 should be fine on my 18x9.5 rear wheels [Nitto approved wheel size range 9.5-(10.0)-11.0].

So, I'm wondering if it is optimum to go with Nitto555R2s [285] in the rear and maybe the Nitto 555s [255] in the front?
