I really screwed up today...I was puting in a new Automatic shifter to replace the old worn out one(leather was cracked and felt loose). Everything was great and was almost done when I heard a POP! Turns out I lifted up a little to much on the shift cable and broke the plastic piece that holds the shifter cable in place and when I tried to fix it, I bent the cable.
What a bad day!!!
Is this a simple replacement or is this going to cost me a fortune? The part is only 65.00. I cant get to the area to replace it. Please let me know if this is a self fix or do I need a pro and how much should I have to pay? Thanks.
it's been a few years since I was in that area, but you may need to drop the H pipe and the tunnel cover - because I seem to remember that the A4 shifter cable is secured in a few places along the way from the shifter to the tranny.
I was in a different position that the cable broke at the bottom of my driveway. Towed to a good trans shop that replaced the cable and just installed the auto trans kit and used my trans fluid-royal purple for 328.00. I understand the job requires the removal of the inside tunnel covers and then needs access to the under carriage so exhaust needs to be moved to gain access. I wanted my car back and the time invested was not worth not to have a tech complete.
Don't feel bad that you lifted the shifter more than the maximum 1/3 inch and it broke, welcome to the club. Whom ever was resposible for that design and the approval for its use were the dumb ones; that POS design is why companies like Hurst won't offer an aftermarket A4 shifter. It wouldn't surprise me if the same design is in the C6.
I had my 98 Corvette automatic shifter cable break and there is a quick fix to it and it usually breaks by the end at the transmission linkage and there is a kit for it for $19.95 out of Ft Lauderdale Fl. the site is www. ATFspeed.com . I found out that is is a common problem for all GM products and Kia as well. No need to by the cable for $96.00+ or pay someone $350.00 to take "H' pipe and tunel cover of . You can do it in your driverway in about 30 minutes.
