the pressure itself isn't...the heat generated from the pump to make the pressure that high can make the oil less effective. basically, within reason its not going to hurt anything. also, a restriction somewhere in the engine could be the CAUSE of high pressure--which would be bad, but the oil pressure doesnt actually cause the problem, its only a symptom

why do you ask?

Oil pumps consume a fair amount of hp...if you've ever tried priming an older V8's lubrication system with a drill, you know what I'm talking about...the drill motor bogs right down. And, I imagine if the pressure is high enough...like 150psi or somethng...that you might blow out the rear seal. It sees full oil pressure, I think.

My stupid oil pressure sensor showing high #'s, altho I'm pretty sure it's the sensor itself, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't in the meantime driving on something that could ruin the engine. Will be replacing it next week. I just changed it 6 months ago, bought the part from GMParts Direct. I wonder if it's still under warranty.

highly doubt there is any warranty on that part

biggest problem and reason for it repeatedly going out is ppl over tightening them... 12ft*lbs is all GM reccomends if I remember correctly

The old 427 ford side oiler engines ran 120+lbs of oil pressure with no problems..

Too high oil pressure can cause aeration/bubbles. Bearings hate bubbles.
FWIW.

and how exactly does pressure make air magically appear in the oil?? jw...lol

on a 3000GT i once had, an oil galley was clogged on the top end and oil pressure was around 80psi..it leaked oil terribly out of the front main seal (where the oil pump was, similiar to the LS1 actually) until it got hot, then pressure was down enough to not leak...
