I have on 02 Z06, when I try to put it in 3rd it grinds pretty bad. The higher the rpms the louder and harder the grind. It only happens in third.

When the car is off, third feels no different than any other gear.
And I am pressing the clutch all the way in. Any ideas.
Could this be either my shift fork or a syncro.

Do you have any trouble getting into 3rd? Sounds like what happened when my 4th gear syncros went out. Started with grinding and now I can't get into 4th at all.

Most likely you bent or broke the 3/4 shift fork...it is one of the weakest parts of that trans....They make a hardened part to replace the failed unit....usuallly that's it...there are also some other things you should do while you're in there....

Let me know if you need help...

I need help, should I still try changing the fluid first? I have no trouble w/ getting it in any other gear, just third. I did just get a new clutch, could that have anything to do with it? Is there any way for someone with little knowledge about manual transmissions to tell if it is the syncro or the shift fork. I can get it in gear when the car is not moving, it make stick a little the first time, but after that it glides right in. But when I'm moving It grinds. It will grind harder or softer depending on the RPM. I can still get it in gear if I shift to neutral first then go to third. Doesn't work all the time though.....

Well, porbably the fork, but....it don't matter. it has to come out anyway.....

It's not "because" of the new clutch...but, it is probably related....however, it does happen all the time...
The forks need to be replaced with the aftermarket one....that fixes it...Call me if you need help.

Experiencing popping out of first and reverse (maybe me thinking it was in gear when it was not), notchiness so that I have to finesse into third gear unless I am really accelerating and tough to get into and know that reverse and first gear are engaged. Does not matter what temp transmission oil is.

Have an 04Z. Does this have the hardened shift fork. All I knew about until your post was that prior to 04 they changed from aluminum forks to steel.

Thanks

Might be 3rd gear synchro worn down. I had the same problem, but on my 98 LS1 coupe. It progressively got worse, and was worse when it was cold out. When the slave cylinder took a dump, I opened the transmission and replaced the synchro. I could feel the blocker ring was all worn at the teeth, no wonder it grinded. After replacement, 1 year and 20K miles later, its still good even in 10 F degree weather.

Fork is my guess also. Plan and taking it out and seeing what the problem is. It will only get worse.

I think it must be the syncro. If it was the fork I would have problems w/ fourth too, right? I've just decided to have another one installed. I'm thinking of going with RPM transmission for the M12. There's is 1495.00. I know of someone else that is selling there M12 localy, for the same price. It has 2300 miles on it would save me $200 in shipping. Don't know which one I'll go for. I should probably go for RPM transmission, that way if there's a problem it could get covered under warrenty. If the other trany broke I'd be in the same situation.

Thanks for your guys input.
