I have my intermediate pipes off at the moment and was thinking of gutting the pre cats why I have access to them. Who has done this and what is the best way to gut them. Any precautions? I am looking for better sound , dont think there is much HP gain. I have the A&A exhaust mod no x pipe. Thanks Jeff
yes there is a gain. if i were in your shoes and had the time to weld get some long tube headers. if not, get some B&B shorty headers next day aired to you and bolt them right in. precats restrict you badly. get rid of them in whatever means-you will feel it more responsive
All you should need to do is get a thin (1/4 to 1/2 inch) pole and drive it through with a hammer, dumping the debris as you go. You may not be happy with the sound if this is all you do though! I've heard of people inserting a straight pipe through there to cut back on turbulence. Might not be a bad idea because I hated the sound of hollow cats. If you just hollow it, the walls are so thin and the chamber makes so much resonance, it sounds too raspy and the sound is horrible. Just my opinion.
I think if it's better sound you want, I'd concentrate on the mufflers. Cars with no cats stink to high heaven and the "noise" they make is not for everyone.
Here is another solution that may work and may keep you legal. The 2002 Z06 is supposed to come with a new single cat that does the work of both cats while causing no more restriction that the larger 2nd cats. According to an article I read somewhere (c5 registry maybe?) they were responsible for a significant portion of the power increase from '01 to '02. You might want to consider replacing all four cats with two of the ‘02s.
